Ul As part of their government partid- o pation class, these Sayville seniors o g are involved in a full-scale lobbying 0\ effort to convince the federal govern- ~ ment to construct highway sound bar- ~ riers from recycled plastic lumber. ~ Picking up where last year's class left ~ off, the students have begun ~ researching the plastics and recycling industries, circulating petitions and making contacts with government officials, the media and their peers in other schools. The class has even developed a marketing scheme to publicize the project, referred to now as CAPS (Caring About Plastic Sound barri- ers). Student-artist Kate Barkauskas created the trademark symbol of a Tubas lUove into spotlight at Oetubafest - by AliI..., J .... anI Often ignored and overshadowed by smaller, more popular instruments, tubas and the students who play them will get have their place in the spot- light at the 14th Long Island Octubafest. Returning for the third consecutive year to Sayville Middle School, the Octubafest is slated for October 21, with rehearsals and clinics at 3:30 p.m. and an evening concert at 7:30 p.rn. The evening conceIt is free and open to the public. Begun last January, the campaign to build recycled-plastic sound barriers is an ongoing project for social stud- ies teachers Robert Kappel's and Grace Ryan's senior honors class. Their goal is to create a grass-roots campaign that ultimately leadS to fed- erallegislation. \What we're doing is creating our own interest group, researching the issue and then lobbying the govern- ment to make a change,\ Kappel explained. Kappel will also enlist the support of his colleagues at a Long. Island social studies teacher confer- ence this month. Though certain aspec~ of the class include mandatory assignments, the project really depends upon the self- motivation of the students.
