Howard Water Authority moves to cure problems of high iron content by Antllony J. Howard In response to resident complaints, the Suffolk County Water Authoriw is taking steps to address the high iron lev- els in the water of the county's south shore communities. But one Sayville resident claims the irreversible damage done to her home by the excessively high iron content have already devastated her family's financial and physical well being. A indigenous element to Long Island, iron appealS natural- ly in the local groundwater, according to Hennan Miller, the water authority's Deputy Chief Executive Officer. If the amount of iron exceeds the state Department of Health's safety levels, the county usually treats the water with a sequestering agent. which mitigates the.,discoloration. . While the SCWA receives periodic c~mplaints of brown'9r- discolored water, several residents complain the high iron levels have corroded their home's mechanical systems, incuning large repair expenses and banning property val- ~es. Maryanne Vavarro and her family moved into their newly constructed Sayville home in 1986 and immediately began experiencing difficulty, she said It began with rusty/orange colored water, which she soon discovered was because of the iron. Soon after, Vavarro said, larger problems such as corrod- ed lawn sprinkler heads, rotted out water heaters and con- stricted pipes clogged with sediment occurred. So far she and her husband have shelled out $15,000 for repairs and have had two homeowner•s insurance .poli~i,e~ can~led · ,.,_ tum to ,.G ttl~ ' .. 5686 Sunrise Highway • Sayville, NY 11782
