THIS TOWN Young Pete Grady squinted at mid- afternoon sun and shook his head for ' steent h time . at a .plle of wreckage that 24 hour s before had been an auto- mobile. Two young men killed out- right , another fatally injured when tne car skidded- ott ronii at great speed , srrmsned into oak tree. The dead had been riding In the front seat. They never knew what hit them , chances are. \She ' s a mess, \ young Mr. Grad y declared , an d several middle - aged spectators nodded heads - in silent agreement. We shooed several onlook- ers out of path of our camera , but they Sept edging closer. An elderly man gingerly touched broken headlamp, kicked oadly ripped tire and craned nec k into space where , right front win- dow had once been. When he with- drew , he was, pale and chewed his lip. \Here it is 3 o ' clock and already more t han 100 people have come to the garage to see tills wreck, \ the youthful garage proprietor confided. \A nice way to. s pend a Sunday , afternoon , hey?\ Morbid curiosity Is strong in many fo lks; that' s a fact. Pretty Eileen Miller , Kansas City, Mo „ symbolizes the thousands of girls who sell Buddy Popp ies in the nineteenth annual nationwide cam- paign ol the Veter ans of Foreign Wars of the United States preced- ing Memoria l Day, for the benefit of disabled veterans , their depend- ant families , and the orphans and widows of deceased veterans . As we left , , our task done , ano ther middle-aged man got down on one knee, peered under - chassis of Wrecked auto , and then got back on his -feet. He brushed dirt off trous ers , straight- ened tie and knocked cigaret te against thumbnail. \That' s as nice a wreck as I' ve ever seen , \ he asserted with authoritative crlspness. A woman tug- ged at his sleeve. \Well never get to Mastic at this rate. \ she declared , and they left. • ' • • Breathtaking is Sayville' s beauty this week. Spring appears to be with us , although we ' re not sure whether were happy about the wlnole thing or not. Only the other afternoon somebody ' s little girl glared at us when , we dipped forefinger into r bay at foot of Poster avenue to discover that the water was still chilly. \ You can 't swim , \ she declared in a ma tter-of-fact manner , and 'then took to her heels by way of adding that there was nothing, more to be said about it , one wa y ' or the other. Do you know , she spoiled our whole day? We haven 't cot ten , back into stride yet. » • • we have some rather remarkable people In This Town! One would have to travel far and wide to find a com- mu nity booster and all-around good fellow to outdo Bill Weinberg. To our way of thinking, he ' s a typical master of ceremonies, and if he doesn 't , mind our saying so, we think he 'd made an excellent Elmer at the World' s Pair . Such being the case , we were far from nonplussed to find the afore- mentioned fellow at the head table at Monday night' s beefsteak supper , his face surrounded by pipe and his hardy frame flanked by \ Doc \ Daley and No rman Broken shire , the latter the famou s radio announcer. At one point In the proceeding s BUI shook, hawts , puffed on his pipe , scribbled in his notebook and emitted one of those characterlstls laughs of his at one and the same time. Following which Alfred Snyder of Patchogue. who never falls to . attend the parties , was heard to remark something to the effect that \ we hove a fellow like Bill in Herb Austin , but froni now on Her b will have to be re- ferred to as The Bill Weinberg of Pptchoguo ' . \ —j. c.
