' Th ey - ' saw : Sonny Hughes ' Sayvilie- team make an inaus- picious beginning , by taking an 18 to 3 licking from Wes t Patchogue. It was obvious that Sayvilie isn 't as bad ns the score would indicate , but they are in dire need of practice and plenty of it. M anager Link' s team played as if they were in mid-season form and are going to have plenty to say about the league championship. The game started off innocently enough, neither side scoring in the first inning. Both scored in the sec- ond inning nnd the West Patchogue team added another tally in the third to assume n 2 to 1 lend. Barnish Hits Two Homers In tlie fourth inning, the Milltown boys sewed up the old ball game. Three Sayvilie errors , mixed with two hits , one a home run by Charlie Bar- nish off the slants of Bill Long, gave the Linkmen Ave big runs. Sayvilie managed to come back with two on hits by Buddy Zegel and Hughes but it was apparent to the fans that the Field Club wns biting off more than it | could chew for It' s first game. West Patchogue score ten runs in Hip last three innings when they began clubbing the unfortunate Bill Long nil over the lot. Nine hits . Inc luding another home run by Barnish , were hunched together to add to the already overwhelming total. Snyvllle could do little with the i . curvcs of .Joe Minkowski, last ' 1 year ' s pitching phenbm ' of * the Hiighesmen. The Field Club will tr avel to Hunt- ington this Sunday nnd will strive for its firs t victory. The box score : W. Vatcho irue (1R) ub r li c T. rtlley ss 0 3 4 0 A. Nistnd lb 7 l l o C. ' The Red and Black, sustained a 17 to 1 licking ^ earlier in the season. The game was played under a barra ge of heckling and booing on. the part , of . ftie Patchogue supporters. The first I inning decided the ball game. The Purple and Gold blasted Sc hwab for a tota l of four hits and five runs. This caused Schwab' s . -retire- m ent and ^ he; was replaced by Glanotti , who , pitchedE . the rest ' of' tbe ga me ' with mediocre mi***** Herrschaft. twirled the entire game for the Wenkmen and held the Mllltowners to six hits , strik- ing out ten. - Coach ' Wenk . star ted . DonneIl y ; singled off Schwab' s glove , and Thelen scored the fifth run when Schwab threw wild past first base. Gianotti replaced Schwab at tills juncture and walked Flannery, but Kruta , up for the second time , fanned , ending the inning. Patchogue came back with one run in Its half of the first on a sinyle by Yost , a steal of second and a scratch hit to left by Schwab. There was no more scoring until tlie seventh. The Wenkmen added three unnecessary ru ns on a single by Thelen , a . w alk to Donnelly, a hit by Flannery and a wallop to left by Kruta. Patch- ogue made a last gasp rally in its last turn at bat. Figuerio was safe when Vander , Burght' s glove interfered with his bat. Gianotti walked and Schwab was safe when Lednum dropped Mul- len ' s throw from deep short , Chamfer then cleared the bases with a lusty triple over Kruta ' s head in left. Herr- schaft bore down and forced Andres to lift a fly to Thel en. Huntin gton will visit Suyvllle today, and the Purple and Gold is favored to chalk up its - fourth straight league win.
