That * Is No Merrick Road We hope that are may Hve to see ska a*y that the general public la- *¦»»\\\*: sorveyoTs . engineers, mem- kexs ot the State Highway Depart- snenL realtors et al will learn that the faiaooa old South Count ry Road. Aeaseated to the days when the state cwatch of the late George Washington rumbled over it , now officially known a s the Montana : Highway, is not the Merrick Road. So far as we can learn there Is not a single length of this load officially known as the Merrick Boad. In the columns of tbe Leader tals week are letters from a surveyor a ukd the State Highway Department r eferrin g to the highway as the Mer- rick Road. We trust such a name will se ver be officially jj iven this thorou gh- fare. It means nothing. Merrick Is a village ( not incor porated ¦ of almost as little Importance as any place of abode on the highway. Why persist la calling this beautiful drive leading from Fulton Ferry. Kings County , to the end of Long Island. M errick Road ? The name . So uth Countr y Road should ne ver have been officially changed . bat , as it has been changed to Mon- ta uk Highwa y, let it remain such but never Merric k. —Babylo n Leader. In oar jud gment , th e public utilit y companies would be serving Long Isl- a nd better if they lessened their fev- erish efforts to accommodate some new developments where homes are not yet beyond the blueprint stage and gav e a little more attention to provid- i ng the established communities with sufficient water, light s and telephones Of course , there is a reason for the great hordes of pipe layers and pole raisers in aud about these homeless developments. But that reason . does not greatly concern the people of vil- lages whose home are still equipped with pumps and lamps and kerosene stoves. E vidently the public utility compan- ies must be urged and the Son is glad to see that Village President Louden of Amityville, has started urging. There is many a stretch of water pine laid on the outskirts of Amity- ville which will be scarcely used this winter. There Is many a pole adorn- ing developments where wires will carry no juice for months to come. The S un believes that in the present emergency on growing Long Island , t be villages which are showing the g reatest increase in population are en- tille d to 8rst consideration by utility co mpanies. —Ling Island Sun. Nassau Learr.s Al Smith' s Bra n d o f Eco nomy While the two political parties in New York State were assembled tn convetions to choose candidates and form their appeals to the voters , a message came from Albany to the tax- payers and voters of Nassau County that has an altogether different mean- ing. Governor Smith is preparin g to again run (or the head of the state on the platform that he proudly acclaims aa his record. For three terms be has bald this high office, and his followers assert he needs no other recommenda- tion than his performance in the past. The message that came to Nassau County Is to tbe effect that this Smith administration la askin g the taxpayers of this county to contribute next year fklrt y^tre par cent mora money to the aUata Governmen t than last year ; in other words their taxes are Increased C1K . 4M over the previous year , 'nun is the platform of economy that Alfred E. Smith is to teQ the people of Nas- sau Count y about when he visits here daring his campaign Of coarse , all will readil y admit that Nassau Count y is growing rapidl y and that we should expect to pay a lar ger amount to the state treasury, bat few Democrats are so ardent as to claim that the countr y ' s wealth has increas- ed thirt y-Hre per cent in one year. A l Smith is able, he i s brilliant , and he la deservedly popular , hot hia claims to economical govern ment win have to be backed np with stron ger proof than his recor d before the vot- ers of Nassau will subscribe to his form of economy. It is only necessary to co ntrast the Smith snd the Coolidge eco nomy to learn the difference be- tween real saving in government and ihe ki nd that All Smith has been gir- ¦ ug Sew York State. —Free port Re- co rder. Babylo n will make no mis;ake if :: follows tbe p roposed example of A zaityTrille and establishes what is knawa as a police depa rtment and 'bus prevents incoming administra- -ians f rom chan ging tbe personel of tbe fo rce except for charges, and then only after an impartial hearing which if adverse to the defendin g of- fice r can be reviewed by the courts. B abylon now has a force as good, if not bette r than any in its history, ad- mittedl y much more efficient than at so me periods. Each day the mem- bers gain experience. Under the pres- e nt regime, the poli cy is not to make tech nical arrests , the officers are ;; - < ur:eo us and tbe stranger within our - .ilea aas the sa me privileges as a resident. The courtes y as well as the ei.c. -e:icy of Ihe police force is ve ry ni icable and meets with popula r ap- p roval. Cnder the present method of e nsaging officers they could be re !: «ved from du ty any time and if the administration changed an entirel y new forte could be engaged to take ihe places of the members now on the for ce. Th is is manifestl y unjust and does not give the police the incentive that they should have. Moreover un- de r the police department syste m we are told that a pe nsion fund can be established by a d eduction from the pay ot the members ot the force As to this point we are not certain , but we think the entire matter should be given consideration. —Babylon Leader. We don ' t venture to say in what form the protest will come, but we do make bold to predict that the craze for setting up stop lights which demoralize automobile traffic and un- necessarily add to the annoyances of travel will come in for a sudden check before long. Scarcely can a motorist drive ten or fiftee miles now with- out being held up by at least one of them at a point where no car is in sight and where at no time does any congestion of traffic require such a sign eithe r fur safety or convenience . One point answering to this descrip- tio n is in the quiet little hamlet of We st Babylon. \ \ whstOthersEiitors A Say About It sbIt ^bbbbb v bSbbbbbbbbKbbW - .fcu my at j SBBBBk ^^^^ HwSsl ,-i ' -«• , ,. ^ET j Nw ¦ ' ' • \» ; i- - • r T ; ¦' ^^ w ^akr ¦^^^^^^^^^^^^^ 11 ^¦^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ W*g S *.
