I what Others EdHors I Say About It ... \t ^untry Aa Whale Is Dry \ . . At a -recent meetin g ot the National • , JBttttor ial Association, held in Los An- \- . etott ee. a surrey was ma de to ascertain ¦ ¦^' ts» opinions of tbe delegates . on the Jf '^ejsestlon of prohibition. The poll , ac- ewrdlag to Zion ' s Herald , ot Boston , eorejred 170 newspapers from SI dlf- testa sta tes and* \ resulted In a vote of ever 190 In Savor ot strict enforce- saent of the Tolstead Act , 29 for modt- acat lon. 6 for government control of n qaor. Han d 3 for repeal. \ More slgnl- Stcant than this , tbe Herald continues , \ was the report on the amount ot • drunkenness tn the country since na- , atonal prohibition has gone Into effect , ¦ '' ¦ • . - US stating that there was less drunk- enness In tbeir partlrular communi- ties and only 15 saying there was snore. \ These figures were given by local editors who are In closer touch -with community conditions than al- most any other group of people. Com- menting on the result ot the survey, the editor ot the Newton. (Mass.) Graphic , who made the investigation , says : \It leads emphatically to the conclusion that no matter what par- ticular sections may Bout the prohibi- tion law , the countr y as a whole is dry. \ \Know Your Oil\ Before decidin g to move to some new locality, through the Influence of some smooth-ton gued salesman— Just stop and count the cost. Then figure out how much you can develop \the old farm \ here , and how much better place you can make . It for even less money, then what the move would cost , and we believe that you win decide to stay light here In God' s country. Scientific farming methods applied right here will accomplish as much or more and will make you as much money as anywhere on \God' s green earth. \ In the slang ot the vernacular of the day, \know your oil. \ Don 't think that you will not have to know soil and climate conditions in that new \Eldorado \ because you will. There are drawbacks In every clime. —Port Jefferson Echo. Relief from Auto Jams Traffic congestion along the Mon- tauk Highway seems to have roused IsHp and Babylon. Isllp Town , in ac- cordance with a proposal of the Bay Shore Rotar y club, will erect signals throughout the business section In Bay Shore. How traffic signals improve a com- munity ia demonstrated wherever they go. Some cities never came into their best days until order replaced chaos in handling of vehicles. The hit-and- miss system should have no advocates today, (or the number ot automobiles bids fair to double within ten years. Before we decide upon the means ot combatin g overcrowded roads it is essential that we use every method to Improve conditi ons. Bay Shore ajrows so quickly that her thorough- fares may suffer dangerous chokin g. If traffic signals will solve the difficul- ty, well and good. If they fail to give relief we shall need some better meas- ures. Babylon Is urged to take over the old trolle y line which skirts the rail- road tracks. A new road may be con- structed that would emerge at Linden- burst. Parallel to the Montauk High- way, this route for motorcars is thou ght ideal as a remedy for the main south shore road. Committeemen have been appointed to confer with the old troll ey line au- thorities. That such a right-of-way would brin g huge benefit goes without saying. Any reasonable expense to develop more efficient handling of traf- fic will prove advisable. The enlightened attitude shown by south shore towns and villages brings hope to those who became disgusted with the automobile Jams on Merrick Road. There is cause tor joy In the uniform signal idea and the likeli- hood that Babylon may tra nsform her useless trolley line Into a thorough- fare. —Count y Review.
