In fry-time the horse suffered lik e •- .ery -hing and iie us ed t o waggie hi- bare stump in a 1110-; di- t res-iag manner when his winged t o rmen tors U\ hi in. His being bald, so to -peak , hu rt hi-looks and made him le - s de- sirable. N obod y wants to ride behind a horse tha t hasn ' t any taii. It makes talk and a man hates to have every- bod y s top and lock at him when he drive- b y. I t ' s funny for a while , but it gets old. So Mr. Conkkn , being a hand y man. manufa ctured an artificial tail and buckled it on to the harness.so that it looked right natural. About a yea r ago Mr. Conklin sold Old Hi!! to Jame= T . l i eMil t , of Sayville , and. so he c laims, loaned the tail to DeMilt to keep up the horse ' s a ppearance. Last week DeMilt sold the horse to William R hode- - . On his way home Rhodes , be- in g a kind-hearted inan and not wish- ing to bother old Bill with a tail, took i t oft ' and laid it in the wagon. Conk- lin came alon g, recognized the horse and passed the time of day with Rhodes . He saw the tail in the wa gon and s aid : -'Here ! What are yon doin g with my tail ? \\ \1 ain ' t got your tail. \ \Yes you ha ve , too. Got it there in the wagon . \ \Wh y, consarn v o n r picture , I jus t bou ght that tail with this old I horse of Jim DeM'lt. \ \Well , he ! didn ' t have any ri ght to sell it. 1 ; loaned it to him. \ \I' ve got nothing j to do with your lending it. I bou g ht i it and I' m goin g to keep it. \ \Well , ! we 'll =ee about that , \ and Conklin grabbed it out of the wagon. \That ' s j my tail and I' ve got it and I' m going j to keep it , and if you want it you 'll ! have to go to law about it. \ That was just exactl y what Rhodes aid. He went right straigh t and sued Conklin for damages , and what 1 5 more he got them to the extent of $ <3.oO and the costs. Just about these times Mr. Conklin has small respect for a law that will let one man sell another man ' s prop- ert y and Mr. Rhodes is sure that it stands to reason tt t at the tail goes with the horse whether it is an artificial tail or a real proper and ri g ht tail anchored s fast to the toe t tf j Tfae ^ pfO tutu t srit —At Morrell' s you will find Reid' s Ice Cream . —A large stage load of summer hoarders arrived on Wednesday for Mrs. l i!' — : - Smith. —Any one wishing a ouantity of ashes and manure can have same by ca lling at the residence of the editor and carting same away. —Master Eddie Hawkins is home from school from Philadel p hia. There is a land beyond the sea , A land that' s ever dear to me. That land is my own native shore Which I may never visit more. Its hills and dales in summer hours, Are deek'd with nature ' s fai rest flowers And this lov 'd land so dear to nio I s found upon the Baltic Sea. The rivulet and mountain stream , In all their pristine beauty seen. Wherein my early childhood hours , I crther 'd n ature ' s fragrant flowers .
