Calkoen , will probably be called to some prominent Brookl yn Church. We hope this may prove to be true. Mr. Conn , the proprietor of the Lon g Island poultry yard , in Cherry street , has moved his barn back on his premise s , which is no doubt quite an improvement. Mr. Jongeneel , R ev. C. .1 . Calkoen ' s successor , will preach Sunday, May 4th , for the first time . He is , however , no Tbeoi. Student as first stated , onl y practicing theology. The Second Dutch Reformed Church of _ Newtown , Conn., was reorganized this week , and stands , in conseq uence , now under the supei vision of the Classis of Long Island the same as Greenvil le. Rev. Dr. Calkoen preached his last sermon heie on Sunday, being ordered to do so b y the L. I. Classis , and bap- tized the child of Mr. Wm. Beebe in the afternoon service. Of course there are always exceptions , but as far as we can ascertain \ j is rather unexpected de- parture from the church is much won- dered at , and has caused regre t to a great many of his friends. His suc- cessor will be Theol. Student Mr. Jongeneel , a name familiar to the peo- ole of Greenville , his father having been the very first pastor of the Dutch Reformed Church. We sincerely hope he will meet with success in his under- taking, be prosperous in his way and la b ors , and last but not least , prove the ri ght man in the ri ght place . Zip Editor Xcws. — Deak Sip.:— After reading the letter from Rev. Chas. H. Pool to Dr. C. .). Calkoen , published in your last week' s paper , I wish to say a few words in his behalf. I don 't tike to interfp l vff. .i? . . , .A' \ ci)urch affairs , but still it \ se ' ems to me that the L. I. Classis have acted rathe r hasty , and somewhat unceremoniously in severin g his con- nections with our church on a three day ' s not ' sim p l y on no other charge thau \ no ( wing satisfactory to the p eop le Ol oayvi.le , \ If complaints have been made (and no doubt such must have been the case ,) about his incapability of bring ing the gospel to his . con gregation , such should have been investi gated , so as to find out whether such was the truth. Some seven months ago an investi gation was considered necessary. Wh y not now ? What fault his people could find with this pastor is reall y a conundrum. Any man of common sense must admit that Rev. Calkoen has fulfilled his duties faithfully , and if it comes to a point has even done more than his dut y. No minister of the Dutch Reformed Church is expected to preach thnce on Sun- days He , as we ll as the previous pastor iiave always g iven the congregation the benefit of an evening service.
