When such a p lace i s reached they un- hi tch the dogs and let the sled descend b y i ts own wei g ht. All the men act as brakes lo prevent , if possi ble , a descent so rapid as to land the e q ui pa g e a com ple te wreck at the bottom. The two s trongest of the drivers take their p laces on the sides at the front of the sled , and the others hold on whore they can; all pull back as stron g ly as possible when the speed increases. Some plant their feet strai g ht in front of them and send the snow H ying j ls if from a snow p low . O thers find themselves taking leaps that would astonish a kan garoo , are d ragged furiousl y along, or , maybe, come rolling to the bottom after the sled. The dogs regard the whole affair as a joke , and with their . t races tied together come dashing al ong in the wild cha s e , some barkin g joyousl y, o thers yel p ing dis- tressedly, as , caug ht in tlie traces , they are dragged to the foot of the hill by their reckless companions. It often seemed a wonder when , even with all our exertions , we could laud sled and party at the bottom in safety. —St. Nicholas. A Tou s h Hauy. ¦When the train pulled ou t of tho depot at Drayton ' s point the other day the mother p laced the child iu a seat , and while she was arrang ing her bonnet the offspring took occasion to disappear through a windo w . Its parent lay down on the floor in a faint , passengers groaned and a brakeman gave the bell cord a yank. The engine came to a standstill and one of the hands walked back a couple of blocks. He found . the bab y sitting contentedly in a mud puddle , tak- ing in the scenery and playing with , its feet. The mother was so overcome that she could not continue her journey. — Providence Journa L Brld g e of Ice. In the fall , -when the ice in the Penob- scot prevents tbe running of the ferry- boats , and while the water in the chan- nels on each side of the island of Old- town runs so swiftly that it will not readil y freeze unaided , the Indians who live on the island aid it and make a safe bridge at smalt expense. They get a bi g cake of ice from the nearest still water and swing it across the channel in a narrow part. In a few ni ghts it 13 frozen hard enough to bear the wei g ht of per- sons crossing, and comes into ur - e for a number of weeks before the other ice is ready. —Boston Budget BR * J. A.
