He was passing over a town and he conId see the peop le gather fa clusters along the streets and t-vist their necks to look up in the sky. It was a large town and the subur bsstretched away for nearly a mile . To his unutterable horror be remembered that he had left his clothes on the bank of the creek. Even If be had *\\ ¦ them it would have been impossible to put them on. This new fangled vehicle o ( his had no facilities for mak ing toilettes and he had to rem—in as nature formed him , with- out any of the superfluities of fashion. _ T ot even a fig leaf encumbered his person. It was an admirable flying costume , bnt was not appr opriate for a public performance. He was just congratulating himself that he was too far above those curious eyes for them to discover his costume when he saw that one group held someth ing in the ir hands . It was a long field gh—— He bent his agonized face once more ri g idl y to the fron t. At least they would not reco gnize him. \Just at this time he noticed that the oc- casional eronks began to grow feebler , and that the geese appea red to labor i_ their fli g ht. They were lwcoming tired , and must inevitably sink under his weight very soon. Then he prayed that the wings of the geese mig ht be strengthened for a season. Ho was willing even , like Jouah , to be cast into the sea; anything, rather than laud iu that town. Th en he clucked encourag ing l y to his fourte en wiu- - nl -. teeds and gently jerked the cord as if he were jerking the reins of bis horse , but -till th ey labored. The old gander ' s hoarse VronUl cronk r seemed to mock him in his despair and his downcast sp irit began to sink. \All at once he heard something whiz by him and he saw a puff of blue smoke away down below . A second or two later he heard the sharp crack of a rifle , the sound having traveled slower than the balh \His blood almost froze in his veins. Hor- ror had lieeu added to horror , and his spirits sank iu the ' depths of despair. \But tho darkest hour was just before the dawn. The whiz of the bullet and the report of the gun had fri ghtened the geese and nerved them to renewed exertions . They made onedesperate effort to reach the friendly cover of the wood - Luudsford » spirits rose _> he saw that the geese were likely to accom- p lish their object. J «ow the eronks of the gander e s ee-iled more cheerful , mid tho breezes brou g ht a. grateful co o lness to the i_au \ s fe- vered blow . He began to hear the solemn laugh of tho forest as the suburbs disa ppeared and the song of the pines sooth *! him like an eoliaii harp . A mile or so from town tho gander gave a peculiar \ cronk\ at the si g ht of water , and the ge us o began circling to descend With an indescribabk ) feeling of relief , Luudsford ti g htened h_ grip as his winged char iot swung round the circle and he recked not out of the icy coolness of the pool into which he w * as p lun g ed Having made fast the end of tho cord to a tre e, he began to cousider what he would do.
