Walter L. Suy dam. Esq., presided ,and the Editor of The 2n ews recorded . The list of commi ttees was first taken up and the duties of each fully exp lained. The question of prizes was then dis- cussed. It was proposed to purchase a bell for hose prize, a lamp for eng ine and an axe with silver blade for book and l adder. Medals will also be pur- chase d The committee was empow- ered to expend $300 for prizes. This is ind ependent of the special pri zes. The b aymen of Sayville will present a s pecial \ prize to cost not less than ?25. It was voted to request each company to recommend proper persons to act as judges in contests, 'l he selection of jud ges and timers will be left to the Committee on Contests. Volunteer Firemen ' s association : That a ll Companies entering for Prizes shall be members of the County Association and shall join the same b y Sept , 1st , JSS9. T h at al l E ng ine C o mpanies shall have ten minutes to p lace the Engine and ten minutes to p lay water. T hat all Hose Companies carry 350 f eet of regulation hose . That none but members of the Fire Department , t o which a Hook and Ladder Truck is attached , shall run with the truck in a contest . That any 25 -foot ladder may be used in the Ladder Contest That no persons shall join in the run or to assist in any contest after any Hook and Ladder , Hose or Engine Com pany shall h a ye started. That any company not taking part in the parade , or fall- in g out of li ne before the finish , shall be debarred from competition for prizes. In all contests no allowance will be made for accidents. Xhe Jud- ges ' decision , in all cases shall be final. The Ti mers will be designated by Blue and White R osettes . The Judges will be designated b y Red and White Ro- settes. The Sayville Hook and Ladder Co., headed b y the Cornet Band , bid fare- well to the old truck house about 7 o ' clock , and marched down Railroad avenue to Ma i n stre e t , around \S par- row Park\ to the new truck house, where the exercises of the evening were opened b y the Rev. JohnH. Prescott , c hairman , wh o called upon the Rev. Th. D oug las, to deliver tho opening prayer . After music b y the band , the chairman , in a f ew ter s e remarks , in- troduced the Hon . James W. Covert , onr R e presentative in Con gress , who was received with great enthusiasm. ilr. Covert was at his best , and the ex- pect a ti o ns o f the p eople were full y realized regarding his abilit y as a speaker. He possesses natural orator- ial p owers and c an a da p t hi mself to any occasion. Gift ed with a fine pres- ence , eloquenc e and wit , h e alwa y s ca rries an audience with him and satisfi es the intellect. The chairm an followed the speaker wit h a happy announcement of the Bazaar , t he b and r en de red another selection , and t he firemen and the crowd proceeded to the new Congre- gational Church , where the baz aar w as held. T he church was soon filled with peo- ple—the largest crowd that ever at- tended a fair in Sayville:—in fact it was difficult to pass throug h the aisles bet ween the tables . The fir emen are under great obli ga- tion to Mrs. John Wood , who was un- tiring in her efforts to make the Ba- zaar a grand success. Hulse , Bay Shore , on Wednesday Jul y 24th , 1889 , at 2.30 p. m., with President Chas. G. Sands in the chair. The mee ting being called for the pur pose of hearing the report of the committee appointed to get advice as to the proper way t o r e move the sea weed at S mith' s Dock , re ported that the sea weed bein g in tide water the ex- pens e of lem o vingthe same would fall u pon the town. After discussin g the matter f ally, it Resolved , ff hat the Commissioners of Hi g hways be requested to remove the Bulkhead at the fo ot of Ocean avenue and that the President of the Board be appointed a committee to confer with the commissioner and see what can be don e about fixing the shore so that the sea weed can be hauled out. On motion of Geo. F. Waller , 500 notices were ordered printed for the use of the health officer. . \ On motion of C. C. Meeting of the Editorial Association in Sayville- A T j arge Attendance and a Good Time. The eighth re gular meeting of the Que ens and Suffolk Co. Editorial As- s ociation was held in this village last Tu esday . Notwithstanding the threatening as- pect of the weather in the morning the general attendance was larger than at any previous meeting, and tha mem- bers pronounced the session the most enjoyabl e yet held. The part y first visited the truck house and were then taken in convey- ances to St. Ann ' s Church and inspect- e d that beautiful edifice , after w hich th ey repaired to the new Congrega- tional Chu rc h , and all expressed sur- prise and pleasure at the progress be- ing made b y Sayvill e. Th e party then departed for the pa- vilion at the foot of Candee avenue , and embarked on the Perry Belmont. Capt. John Edwar d s , for the White House , at Water Is land . The sail over was a treat enjoyed b y all. Arriving at the Whit e Hous e , th e v isit o rs took a vie w of Old Ocean until dinner was an- nounc ed. Land lord Ry der prepared a splendid shore dinner , w h ich was \discusse d\ in an animated and appreciative way b y the p ar ty in convention assemble d. After the coffee Rev. John H. Pres- cott was called upon , and delivered one of his characteristic speeches. It was one of his best efforts , and all enjoyed it thorou g hly. Bro. Geo.
