By the way, can they be called chambermaids when they are all of the masculine-gender. ¦ . The route for thirt y miles after leav- ing Santa Barbara is splendid. On the one hand rJ i e orchards and wheat fields , and on the other the ocean roll- ing in at your feet. In some places the railroad runs on a rocky ledge twent y or thirt y feet above the ocean . At Sangn ' s , whore we lay over for an hour for the train from Los Angelos (Santa Barbara is on a brand?,) we had a heavy shower of rain and hail , a regular down pour. After leaving here we have to climb tip over four thousand feet and it made our two locomotives puff a nd snort and go j low at that. At nine o . clock p. m. Mrs. G. was stowed away in her berth , with the curtains up so that she could look out , and I was out in front, of the car on the low er step, and holding on for my life , while we rushed down and around the loop, where if our train had been Ion? enough , the locomotive would h ave passed under the rea r ear of its own train , some eighty feet below it. Ihis nig ht was horrible. No peace , no sleep. Peop le passing in lookin . \ for berths , talking to the porter or their companions, and keep ing us wide awake , and very mad. \What can t do! \ What shall f do! \ one woman exclaimed , when she found the berths were all taken . \You mi g ht stop shouting, \ said Major Lewis , which if not polite , echoed the sentiments of all those who were trying to sleep. Sever- al of those who thought they were to have a whole section were undeceived , particularl y one lad y, who though t she was very smart , and gave the porter a dollar , not to let down the upper berth , but was awakened in the ni g ht and had her dollar returned , and a big man hoisted in to the berth above her. .Morning came at last , and we were rushing ihrong h the large whea t and barley fields of Central California. Imag ine Hemps t ead p lains extended for hundreds of miles , with here and there a little bunch of trees , that sur- round the house , or barn. All else a v i vid green. Occasionally we would see a man or two with six: or eight horses and gang pl o ws. Two teams were three furrows while four teams appeared to make five or sis furrows at a time. Many fields appeared to be miles in length. San Francisco , April 10th , and a :ooI , wind }' , disagreeable day, and a lust y, dirty dry, *\ was our ' first ex- pressed op inion of it as they \ ra ttled our bones over the stones \ on our way to the hotel. Now we know better , eschew coaches and take the cable cars , which run everywhere and at all times. The city is built in , through and over , a successio n of sand hills , and how they ever drain, it is one puzzle , and wh y it is not burnt down every year is another , as most of the buildings are of wood , and even the more pretentious ones are so loaded with wood-trimmings that they are little better. No house built in the last ten years dare to look at the street , unless it has two bay windows and this hotel (the Palace ,) has nothing else on its four fronts. Thursday , A pril 11. Went per Cable road to Golden Gate Park , where we hired a carriag e to take us throug h the park , a ride of three or fou r miles to the Cliff House and Satro Heights. The roads were sp lendid , and how they have made these sand hills to blossom so in four or five years is a wonder to mo. The sun was shining bri g htl y 'and the rocks w ere covered I with seals. They are much nearer to the house than I supposed. While we were there a steamer from the south passed in very near the rocks , and it was very funny to see the clumsy things throw themselves into the sea and go swimming off a dozen or two in a shoal. We then rode up to Sut v o Hei ghts , which is in the rear of the Cliff House , and some two or three hundred feet hi g her. Mr. Sutro has cut road s , blasted rooks , built paths , and made as perfec t a garden , as can be found anywhere , with scores of statues and crowned it with his dwell- ing, and all is free to visitors , excep t the house. You look down at the seals and rocks , oyer the top of the Cliff House , to the north of which he is blasting rocks to build an immense acquartuin. Rode back by another road to the north of the park where we had good views of the entran ce to the har- bor , bay and fortifications . In the afternoon went down to the docks , and was astonished at the amount of shipping, and found they had some ideas of their own even in the matter of rigg ing. Saw an im- mense five-masted schooner without any topmast or topsails. \ Am not cer- tain as to whether this idea is a good one. The wood ratli/i es on the wire ri gging on other vessels I think is good , although at first rather shocking to ones ideas of being shi p shape . • Mrs . Shattuck called and we went for those heathen Chinese , but like Bill N v es parti.e• , we got the worst of it . Although we saw the Joss house , got tea and sweetmeats in one of tli e res- taurants , they got our money and . any- one who expects to get th a best of John , will be likel y to get left. Called on Dr. Wm, Carman , \ an old settler from Brookhaven this afternoon. When we were, boarding at Port Jefferson thirty-five years , ago he was . at the Towndsend House with us , bat left for this p lace the following winter , r and has never been east of the Rock ys since, Wo spent an hour very p leasantl y talking oyer old ti m es , as he is only about four blocks from the hotel , we fin* it y ery convenient and p l easant.
