Peter ' s Church was beautifully Illuminated for the llrtt time with incandescent lights on last Sunday week and proved q uite satisfactory. The main roads here are kept in very good con dition considering the amount ot travel over them and another good thing, they are well corner ' of M ain street anil Maple avenue to Mr # Crum ' s lot on Main street , where the Journal oflico lately stood . A great many of our business wagons look quite spruce with their new coats of paint , and we must confess the owners feel so proud that they imagine they have got the brass buttons on already. . Mr. Hesker , who resi ded on ,?d avenue , died of consumption on Thursday of last week and was buried on Saturday afternoon. The funeral ser- vices were held at the Episcopal Church by the Rev. C. Evidentl y we are too old for the p arts we have taken in the program an d have to go slow. Indiana and Cal ifornia avenues a. half mi le distant on each side are nearl y as fine. At every hal f m i le are cross streets , dividin g the land into blocks a half mile square. There are no fences , but rows of trees or hedges of ever- g reens divide the land and make the boundaries. Onl y think of our miserabl e little roads m comparison , and yet this us the garden of this continent , and realized nearl y a million of dollars la s t year from the sale of oranges , lemons and raisins alone , to say nothing of fi gs , pears , a pricots , w alnuts , etc., and vet the firs t house was built here in 1870 , and the first child born here is not yet 20 y ears old.
