A new clock , wei ghing two and a half tons , has been placed in. the tower of the Glasgow university, similar to the great clock at Westminster. The frame of the clock newl y erected is horizontal and of cast iron p laned. It is &i feet long, 2 feet wide and li feet in _ depth. It is supported on beams built well into the wall of the tower , so as to obviate vibration. The wheels. which are of g un met a l , can bo moved separatel y, as the . p ivot holes are screwed to the frame. The main wheels of the striking and quarter trains are twenty mches in diameter , and attached to them are cams to lift the hammers , which are fixed in iron frames connected with tho clock by cranks , and having a check spring to prevent vibration. The wei ght of the hammer that strikes the hour is 120 pounds , and it is lifted ten inches. There is an automatic a pparatus at- tached to tho clock which stops the quarter peals at ni ght a nd s ta r t s them in the morninf The escapement of tho going part «s known as the double three legged gravity, invented by Lord Grimthorpe. Tlie pendulum is of zinc and iron , to counteract- influences of temperature. The tubes aro arranged so that tho expansion of one raises the center of s rravitv. while that of tho other lowers it The bob of tho pen- dulum is cylindrical, and weig hs 300 pounds , and the beat is ono and one half seconds . The \ bolt and shutter \ app liance of tho nobleman already numed maintains the mo tion -while the clock is being wound. J. B. O riental life must possess charms fo r the s tud en t o f hum an nature f or ages; that of Persia is of especial in- . tcre st , because , whil e apparently cast , in fixed molds of immemorial usage , it is more p lastic and mobile than that of other eastern countries. The Per- sian is of a vivacious , mercurial dis- position , and has none of that aversion to change , as such , which is so marked a characteristic of the Chinese- or the I ndian. Men of wealth or position traveling hi Persia usually send in advance and lii t v * f t hnuc n f l m'inn . tli o ii- tz tn - x r in n place , or they are entertained by friends. Tho vaunted hosp itality of olden times, still in full vogue in ori- ental countries, is no indication of superior amiability or breeding; it is tho result of circumstances—a system of mutual accommodation under un- avoidable conditions , i n -which the host dispenses a courtesy which he knows he may need in tur n. But the men of tho middle and lower classes generally resort to tho caravan saries , where they take a room, cook their own meals , and sleep on a rug they carry with' them. — Cor. St. Lot q s Globe-Democrat. - . minted by a Dare. , . ., An English Traveler Tells of the Flend- i * Unc s 3 of the Moors. Two products of the barbarous ap- p lication of their savage law are the | murder cairn and the Zaouia , or sanc- | tuary . One and the other are to be found ill throu g h the country. Tlie murdei cairn is but a heap of stones over the spot where a murder was committed , to which every passer by : adds one. The sanctuary is a refuge , in which tbe criminal wlio reaches it is for n time perfectl y safe. It is not necessary to enlarge on the utility of the sanctuary in a country suffering , from a government like that of Mo- J roee o . All this crueltv . as practiced accord- ing to tho law of the land , has pro- duced in the Mooi - s an indifference to life more callous than that evinced b y j most Orientals . The following story, ; related by an En glishman , who was an eye witness of the e vents , is a hor- rible i l hisirution of this fatalism and of the absolute reverence in which the sulta n ' s decree is held. An Englishman , resident in Tangier , seeking one morning to leave the town by one of tlie gales, found the gate dosed and a large crowd assembled before it. He also saw a number of soldiers , and in their midst a couple of . prisoners with thei r hands bound to their sides. One was :i nionnfainee i from the Riff , tlie other a tall aud handsome young fellow , a native ot Tang h - r. He asked what crime these men had committed. A Moor , repulsive in appearance and dressed as a butcher , was there awaiting tlie con- denino t i. His we apon was a small kuife with a blade some six inches long. He was a stranger , and ha d offered his services because all the Mohammedan butchers of Tang ier had taken refuge in a sanctuary. A heated discussion arose between tliis wretch and tho officer in charge as to the blood money he was to receive lor tlie jod. ane two victims sioou o y andlisteued. Thebutcher demanded S O francs a head. The officer finall y agreed , though with ill £ race. Then the butcher seized the Rifhau , threw him on the ground , and knelt on his chest. The ' E ng lishman turned away his bead. Ho heard sounds of a horrible stru g g le , • hi the midst of which a lioaree roioQ cried, -- 'Gi ve me another knife , mine does not cut. \ Another knife was broug ht mid the head hewn from the bod y. The soldiers cried faintly, \God prolong the life of our lord and master. '\ Then . came the second victim. , He had watched the operation. A gain ' they wrang le*} - j o ver his blood ,. the officer refused / to.rem en i her his prom- ise and said he would only g ive 20 francs for , both heads. The butcher accepted; ' The prisoner begged that He threw his turban to another. He cried , in a.clear voice , \There is no .
