Have you ever noti ced how she rolls w hen in that position ? Well , an j - one of those downward lurches is liable to throw the end of the heavy boom so deep into a wave that the boat is tri pped up and capjiied befare yon can realize what is. happening ! At th e sam e time , any on e of those upward lif ts is lia b l e to stand t h e boom on e nd alongside of the mast. The sail whi ps around the tall stick in the most maddening fashion , the young sailor in charg e of the boat is unable to gain control of it , and v/j tb the n ext heave of the the sea or blast of ' wind over goes the unmanageable craft , l eaving its occupants to swim for their lives . Again , the sing l e sail o f a catbo a t of a ny s i z e is s o po werf ul that its sheet m ust be b e l a y e d w ith s e ve r al tu r n s in order to secure it in a livel y breeze. While thus fastened it is very likel y to become j ammed in the clear , in which eas e the result of a s udden squall would be alm ost certafn disaster. — A catboat is a fine , hand y craft for skiled boatmen , bu * . They were wedged in like sardines in a sardine box , there weie so man}- of them . The da\- was sp lendid , and the children had a happy time ot it , rousing the peop le on the way with their toot-horns , which some of the boys had brought, with them , and with their merry shouts , and sing ing as they passed along. Bay- port , Blue Point , and Patchogue, seemed alive with peop le , who were anxious to see what was going on , coming to the doors , and windows , and out into the streets, responding in Chatauqua fashion, to the greetings which thev l eceived. The children had a good time of it in greeting the older folks , and so did the older folks seem to have , in greeting them. The grove reached , refreshments were first in order , and out came the baskets of p rovisi o n s , in all directions , the contents of which , after being spread out on the ground , very quickl y disappeared. Then came towing on the river, with other amuse- ments , and subsequentl y, the eating of watermelons , ice cream , and so on , which seemed to about finish up the enjoyments of the day. B y live o clock , after a delightful time of it , the chil- dren were safe home again. Superin- tendents Brown and Nauert , did sp l en- didly in their management of the pic- nic.
