Charlie Worth , of Winfield , spent the 4th with friends in this \ illage. There ' s a merry twinkle in the lus- trous op tics of Charlie Stoppani as he snii f s tho saline breezes wafted o ' er the bosom ot the G. S. if., while seated on the porch of his new palatial residence. We are pleased to know that Mrs. C.W. Hayes is improving in health. We enjoyed an exceedingly p leasant chat with her last Sunday, and found her to be a most amiab le lady. We hope to hear of her permanent recov- ery . Cap t. Harry Richmond was seen jog- g ing along behind \ Bab y - ' yesterday morning, seated in his newl y-painted buckboard . with the X. D. E. at his side and \ Boots \ majesticall y occupying the back seat. Say, ye noble son of old Nep tune , p lea s e f avor b y naininc; the color used in decorating the running gear of your vehicle. It' s a dandy, Mr. and Mrs. Monroe Hawkins cele- brated their 15th anniversary Friday evening, the 2 'J th hist. The tune passed very p leasantl y with music and sing- ing. They received some very nice presents in silver , g lassware and china , also a handsome rug, a hang ing lamp, aud several other nice presents from the Grand Central. The next in order was \Home , Sweet Home. \ All left hop ing they would live to en j oy another one later on. Morrell' s pure cream at Carter ' s. Wild Rise in Wild Oats. — 'Ti s re- ported that the considerate peop le of Bayport are contemp lating the earl y construction of a fiat-boat , to be used mainl y in t r ansporting pedestrians from Bayport to Sayville and vice rerau , via the country hi g hway, which is , dur- ing every storm , fairly inundated. — Surel y, this is not a hi g h-sounding com- p liment to the residents of the two villages , and rather an unfavorable re- flection on the general disposition and character of a large share of the ow n - ers of propert y l y ing on either siqc of wild oats-choa ked Brown ' s Uiver. Com petent jud ges , who have made the an- nual condition of Brown ' s River a sub- ject of earnest thou ght and consider- ation for a period of years , assert that with the coming of the glo- rious fourth the stream mentioned is fettered b y on exceeding rap id growth of wild oats wfiich at once impedes the flow of water from the upper springs and lake , there by causin g iue roadway referred to be submerged and greatl y impaired. From close obsei ration it is ascertained that at the advent of Jack Frost the weeds are snapped asunder within some four or five inches of the river-bed , so remaining until another gro wth of the obnoxious , thrifty oats spring »uto e x istence, pari; Eu ccecdir-; - - year develops an additional barrier to the outward progress of the waters of the river. An inspection of the hi gh- way across the meadow throug h which the .treau j strugg led only yesterday, would convince a casual observer of the n ecessity of immediately clearing it of the incre a sing obstructions , or raising the roadway at least two feet from its present position. The fair fame of our own and sister village must not be tarnished b y the continuance of such an eye-sore as is Brown ' s River and vicinity at this writing. We would suggest a prompt appeal to the \ statoots , \ as the learned jud ge in a M'Liss \' said while with us \ recently, and remember his assertion— \The statoots can . hang you , but you can 't hang the statoots. \ C a g ^ naud s oi aa j jesigft ti in G ranu and Marble Monuments , Headstones etc. Goldsm ith , West Patchogue. * - —Soda water at Putnam ' s Pharmacy Bayport. Frpm our own correspondent. Last Sunday, while at Church , the house of Susan B. Glover was entered and ten dollars taken from a bureau drawer. It is believed that the guilty part y will be found . During the recent thunder storm , the unoccup ied house of Hutchinson H.
