I did not punish the boy becau se I know I have a hot temper, and on- account of some talk before , I concluded to ad op t some other m ethod to make him acknowled ge the theft. I went out . on the stoop and t h oug ht. Som etime ago the boy took a blanket , but would n ot admit it I told him then if he did not own it up I wo uld shoot him down , and made as thou g h I wonld take the r evolver and do so. He fin all y admitt ed it I tho 't I would try this method again. I went int o the house , but the boy had gone to bed. I keep my house shut up at ni g ht. Onl y the boy and myself stay there. -— We undressin the dark and sleep in th e same bed. I thought I would go to bed this night and went up stairs. The boywa s in bed. I followed him out and listened. He appeared to go in the directi on of the chicken coop. I followed and laid down in the bashes a bout h alf an hour , expectin g he would return , but he h as not ' I fixed doors and shutters next day to (lay a ' t rap to see if h e wonld return. Having just learned that the f e is a good opening in this village to sell shoes , would say that ¦•• ' - ' - • no competition and no opposition is bad for the public , because you have to take what you can get and pay the price asked or go without. It is also bad for the dealer in the end , b ecause i t d raws trade out of town in time;-besides some outside cap italist mi g ht hear of it , and start on a large scale , then it would be too late for us little fellows to start , and might freeze us out; entirely, so I mi g ht as wel l start injust a l ittle ahead of them, with a few pair of Shoes. Don ' t intend to buy very heavy at first: won ' t do to run too much risk. Might increase graduall y. Will show some of them in the west window—not many of them, but just a few.
