Greenport High Scorei Win Over East Hampton After losing to Southampton and Mattltuck the previous week, Green- port High School opened up the sec- ond round of Section II with a 46 to 29 win over East Hampton at Green- port last Friday night. Trailing at half time 13 to 12, Greenport staged a sec- ond half rally to far outdistance their Southside opponents. Buckin with 14 points and Clark with 12 were the high scorers for the winners while Harkness and Digate vith 6 points led the East Hampton point get- ters. Tomorrow night Greenport will play the Sag Harbor, Section II leaders on the latter's home court. In the pre- vious meeting between these two teams at Greenport, Sag Harbor eked out a 24 to 22 victory. Next Tuesday evening Greenport will travel to Southold for the return engagement of the annual home and home series between these two teams. Southold won the initial encounter at Greenport, the-first victory by a S. H. S. basketball team over Greenport in several years. GREENPORT F.G. Fouls Pts. L. I. R. R. STATION Compare our prices with New York's Larccit Stores The Polish Trio by taking two games last week in their match with Aver- ette's Red Horses made their record for the past three matches read eight out of nine games won. The Old Town Players and the champion I. M. Young team were the victims of the Polish Trio's victory drive in the two matches previous to the one with the Red Horses. In last week's match it was Adam Zaveski who was responsible for his team's two game win. Rolling scores of 211, 198 and 159, his margin of pin- fall over his opposing anchor man, Lloyd Dickerson, was the deciding fac- tor in -winning the match. Adam, de- spite the fact that his season's aver- age is 167, had failed to roll a game over 200 before last week when he at last broke the jinx. Lew Davison had a big night for himself with a total pinfall of 561 and his team's defeat could not be charged up to him. The Red Horses had a greater pinfall for the match than did the Polish Trio but it is games won or lost that count in deciding the league standing. The Postal Department took over second place from the Yacht Club who were idle by winning three straight over the lowly Old Town Players. The Postal trio had three games all over 500 while their opponents experienced the worst night of their mediocre bow- ling career. Artie Gagen by piling up 52 pins in the three games gained 6 pins on Charlie Bennett with whom he is figh it out for high average and is now only thirty pins behind. I. M. Young & Co. after their trim- ming the week before at the hands of the Polish Trio came right back last week to win three in a row from Ben- ny's Tavern. The latter team after several weeks of high class bowling gave a comparatively poor exhibition in their match with the champions and the I. M. Young team were offered little opposition. The Yacht Club-Phil Weckesser match was postponed until a later date. POLISH TRIO I. Krupski 168 154 148 A. Blaschach 152 154 157 A. Mat- tituck is leading in Section 5 with Ave wins and no defeats. In fact the only game the champs have lost this year is one to Greenport who they later trimmed in a return engagement. There is no doubt that it is one of tlie best squads to represent Matti- tuck High School in many years. Southold, also has a good team and although their record is not as im- posing as the one compiled by their neighbors to the west it Is by no means one to i)e ashamed of .Their Section 5 record stands at two wins and one loss while their season's count shows five victories against four defeats. Three of these losses were decided by two point margins in games which the \breaks\ could have decided the other way. It is the best team \Goldle\ has coached in several seasons. The last time Mattituck and South- old met earlier in the year it was a runafway for the Section 5 champs. The local team put up its worst exhib- ition of the season to the disappoint- ment of their followers. Since that time Coach Goldsmith has experimen- ted with different combinations with great success, and the team has been showing fight and a real competitive spirit. We are not looking for a Southold victory Friday night but we are pre- dicting a real close score for the boys are determined to show that their last exhibition against Mattituck was not a true measure of the equality of the two teams. Southold is still In the run- ning for the championship of Section 5 and can only be eliminated by losing to Mattituck which is another reason why the boys will be in tJfore fighting all the way. Next Tuesday evening Southold will play host to Greenport in a non-league encoimter. The home team will en- deavor to repeat their early season vic- tory over the \Porters.\ 531 506 464 AVERETTE'S RED HORSES L. Davison 190 202 169 P. Prince 149 134 170 L. The Farmers were the winners of the first half in a play-off with Lake Lodge. The steady play of Cap- tain Lew Breaker and his two teatr- mates, Joe Dickey and Stan Salter, are responsible for their success. The A. & P. team led by \Champ' McCaffery, former Southold High School star is in second place with 6 wins and 4 losses. Games are played every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings at the Cutchogue Recreation Center. The Second Half Standing of the League is as follows: W. L. In the first game the Faculty took a thriller by the score of 18 to 16 and the last two games were just as close. The match was without doubt the finest that has been played this year. In the other match the Bombers continued to keep within striking dis- tance of the leading Bayview team by winning two out of three games from the Firemen, thus taking sole posses- sion of 2nd place and sending the Firemen into 3rd place one game ahead of the Faculty. Next week the two bottom teams will play the two lead- ers and try to pick up some lost ground.
