Community Volley Ball Leagu* (Games ployed every Monday evening «t the Southold High School Gym- nasium) Bayvlcw by taking three straight games from the Firemen in the first match climbed into first place and the Firemen dropped back into a tie for 2nd. In the second match, the Bomb- ers playing very good ball took two games out of three from Bayvlew and thereby climbed Into a tie for second place. The first two games were easily won by the Bombers but Bayvlew after a slight rest came back and took the final game of the match. The Firemen after losing three straight to Bayvlew came back in their second match of the evening and took the faculty across two games out of three. The faculty played excellent ball in the first game but lost their winning touch in the second and third games. Repeats Win Over Packard Hose It appears now as if the Protection Engine Co. was the undisputed chf^m- plons of the Southold Fire Department as far as bowling is concerned. Ans- wering another challenge from the Packard Hose Co. whom they had de- cisively defeated several weeks before, the Protection stalwarts were found ready and not wanting by winning by the same number of pins (176) in their match at Recreation Center last Sun- day afternoon. The winners averaged 172 pins per man while the losers had to t>e satis- fied with 160. Teddy Parashes whose bowling activities have been limited this winter, showed the boys that he still remembers his strikes and spares by averaging 186 for top man for the afternoon. Charlie Montgomery and Bill Raf- ford were the only bowlers on the Packard team to roll anywhere near their season's averages, the former hav- ing 174 for the three games while the latter piled up an average of 172. \Stel\ forgot what day it was (he thought he was still rolling in the I. M. Young- Polish Trio match) and he took a sound thumping from Teddy Parashes. \Windy\ Gagen beat \Dickey \Davy\ beat \Hummer* and so it went down the line. Bill Raflord was the only man on the Packard team to beat his man. Walter Williams being the victim. Although it seems just too bad to see such keen rivalry come to an end, any future matches between these two teams would be just a -waste of time. Protection Engine Co. has proven Its supremacy on two separate occasions in a manner that banishes all doubt even from the minds of the most skep- tical. If Eagle Hook & Ladder Co. can now find a team we may hear more about bowling activities among the companies of the Southold Fire De- partment. PROTECTION ENGINE CO. Bowl For Your Health \hfr. M. Young & Co. vs. Postal Department 9:00 Polish Trio vs. Phil Weckesser The biggest bowling news of the week culminates around the three straight win by the Polish Trio over I. M. Young S t Co., team in their match last week. (Your reporter has been waiting for weeks to write a story similar to this.) Apparently unstopable in their drive to their third straight championship, the league leaders were brought sud- denly to a halt by the \whitewash\ administered at the hands of the Po- lish Trio. No one was more surprised than the I. M. Young boys themselves. Alibies for the defeat were flying thick and fast but very little credence was given to the excuses. If the champions were looking for sympathy they failed to get it. They asked the question \who will knock us from our lofty perch\ just once to often. \Bosco\ again led his teammates in plnfall with an average of 177 for the three games. Adam Zaveski and Izzy Krupski both enjoyed good nights and only in the last game did the I. M. Young team have as much as a ghost of a chance. Little more can be said about the match except that the losers can ex- pect more trouble from now on in as much as the spell they had apparently cast over the other teams in the league has been brcften. There is no doubt that this defeat has been a good thing so far as bolstering up the hopes of the other entries in the league and the battle for the championship is far from over. Benny's Tavern made a comeback last week after losing three straight to Phil Weckesser's the week before and took two out of three from Averette's Red Horses. Louis Kroleski averaged 180 for the three games and his team experienced little difficulty in taking the last two games of*the match .The Red Horses are proving to be the big- gest disappointment of the current sea- son. ^ The Southold Yacht Club gained three full games on the league leaders by taking three straight from the Old Town Players. They are now three games behind in the loss column with one postponed match with Benny's Tavern yet to be rolled. (Doni sell short the Yacht Club's chances to win the championship). In spite of a 442 score in the final game of their match, the Postal De- partment made it three straight over the Phil Weckesser Trio to hold pos- session of third place in the league standing. Artie Gagen with scores of 202, 190 and 139 climbed within 36 pins of Charlie Bennett who holds the high- est individual average with 170 mark. I. M. YOUNG & CO. Greenport Drops Two Qose Ones East Hampton at G. H.S. Friday Greenport High played some of its best basketball of the season but came out on the losing end in both its games last week-end, dropping a lea- gue game at Southamptw 32-20 on Friday and a non-league encounter at Mlattituck on Saturday 43-38. O. H. S. is having difficulty winning the close ones this year, a knack last years team excelled in. Friday's game was exciting and close all the way, with the score tied at 12 all at half time but it was Saturday's game that really was the classic of the year. High scoring tilts such as this one are a rarity in these parts and come as a rule only when there is loose guarding. However neither team could be accused of the latter. G. H. S. in particular guarded so close, three of their regulars were chased on fouls. Spectators claimed the fast breaks and accurate shooting in this game excelled anything seen on a lo- cal court in years. Tomorrow night Easthampton plays at Greenport as Section II starts the .second round. The box score: Southold Wins Over Bridgehampton Loses to Riverhead (Continued from Page 1) Southold draws a bye in the Section 5 schedule this week. The local team will be idle until a week from Friday when the boys travel to Mattituck to play the league champions in a re- turn engagement. We are betting that the score •will be considerably closer than it was when the two teams met just a month ago. Box Score SOtJTHAMPTON F.G.
