Beat sep ar ately four eggs , adel the yolks with more of the flour ; put one t nhlospoonfu l of girj<rer , same of cinnamon , one tenspooni ' til of ground cloves , nnd one of soda ; stir in two cups of fruit , the whit es of tho e 'ggp and the remainder of the flour. Bake in tin pans well greased. ¦ Roiled Leo ov Mutton. —A leg of nv. i rejn fov boiling should hang two days h tore ccolting. . Cut off the shank bone , trim tbe knuckle , wash and wi pe the leg ver y clean ; plunge it into sufficient boiling water to cover it; let it boi l up once ; elraw the pot to tlio siele of the fire , and let it cool till nearly lukewarm ; draw it forwar el again and simmer gentl y tw o hoiu 's anel a half , never lettin g the water boil ; put a tables poon fnl of salt in tho water , and s kim it while cooking. Take a pint of the water anel boil it in a saucepan till reduced ono-half ; add two ounces of butte r and a table spaonful of flour , wel l mixed to gethe r , salt and pep- per ; stir all well to gether nnd boil up onee ; pour over tito mutton when dish- ed. Ca per snuoe should be nerved with boiled mutton. Treat thk cows tlindm. —There are too many w ho exhibit a roughness of treatment towards the cow , and yet no domestic animals are more sensitive or more quickl y feel the unkindnesn shown them . They can be made docile and mild in their expositions or timid nnd wild , just iu acccrel unce with the treat- men t they rec eive from the herder anel milker ; and it is a well established fact that a cow will \transmit her disposi- tion in a great degree to her progeny. A rou gh , quick-tempered person should n ever be employed as a milker ; and one who will , on any pretence whatever , kick or strike a cow should be kicked in turn , from the barnyard into the street , nnd never be allowed to ' return. Gen- tlenes s will increase the quantity of the milk , as has been shown by a change from n cruel and irraciblo herder to one who practiced kind and gentle treatment, It is nn injury to cows to bo driven faster than an easy wal k , to or irom tho pastures, To bo nrge ft on by tli enightlns a boys , and who are perhaps on horseback , is aur o to dry up or lessen tho flow of milk. Cows should always be made as com- fortable as possible , nuinu ier and winter ; it pays to do it. ExTitAoiunN 'AitY CuiiKf * . —We have read man y accounts of tho extraordina ry cures by Dit. Walker ' s C alifornia Yineoak Bitter s , which have seemed incredible. We are inclined to believe them , as many of those who vouch feir them are persons whose veracity we nan guarantee. The newspapers teem with testimonials of this cha racter , nnd there is an air of par- ticularity and of truth nbout them which c annot be resisted. One manifest superi- ority the Yin'kuai * BiTT'Ehs possesses over other Alterative and Tonic preparations. It contains none of the burning llnitls with which most advertised Hitters are impreg- nated. It cannot create Fever. Instead of cloueling the brain , i t clears it if clouel- ed. I t is well known that Alcohol , e ven of tlio purest description , weakens and nntones the stomach instead of bracing it , a nd is , therefore , poison in cases of Indi- gestion. Fancy, then , what must be th e effect of the cheap Firc -irater employed in making ordinary Bit ters and Tinctures , on the weake ned nnd inflamed di gestive o rgans. Vineoah Bitters , on the other hand , soothes the stomach , while it in- creases the appetite and relaxes the bo wels. !>r. Walker is a regular ph ysi- cian , and his remedies have jus t, as much au thority ns any standard remedies of the facul ty. We believe they are destined to become n household medicin e. — Com. MV! M. Carlton. Alcsrs , llei s and Flogel have lately pub- lished the result of an elaborate series of investi gation s into the subject of the auro - ra , and especiall y as to its altitude and its position in space , and they sum up their conclusions in the following pro positions : 1. 'Che aurora i s a luminous p henomenon i n regions which are entirel y outside- of <iii r atmosp here , or so situatetl tlr .tt only the lowest portion enter s into the outer- most strata of the atmosp here. Thes ob- served altitude of tlio- aurora varies from time to time , but the basal portion has been d etermined to be at least forty miles in hei g ht , which , of course , would precl ude the ide-a of a direct association of tbisp he- nonieuuii with clouds , or of the possibility of its interposition between a distant mountain and the observer , as has been as- serted. 2. The largest portion of an au- rora is a luminous ocean of white lig ht which probably has ' its centre in tho mag- netic pole and thence may extend more or les s toward the sn-ath . Its exact magni- tude can only be determined by cor responding observations in hi g h northern a nd more southern latitudes at a great dis- tance apart. The depth of this luminous stratum , o r the distance between its upper a nd lower bortlcrs , has no t yet been ascer- tained. 3. This universal luminous ocean is bounded by a fringe , ex tending in the directio n of a magnetic parallel circle , w hich developes over a more or less ex- tended space, tbe p henomena of rays , and which seem to be exclus ively limited to it ; the observer north of the fringe seeing rays to the south of him , and the northern sky exhibiting only a general white li g ht. I t is probable that this border or fring i- may nave a width reaching 400 mil es. 4. The frin ge in general , ' shor tly before- j period of radiation , is th roivn out in the form of concentric waves of light from the unive rsal luminous ocean ; the non-lumi- no us space remaining behind this lig ht is tbe well known dark segment. 5. Tho radiating marg in usually divides into a number of secondary areas •which we may cal l the fields of radiation . G. The fields of radiation appear to move with groa t ve- locity to the westward in the direction of the ma gnetic parall el circle. 7. 7?he fields of radiation send out upward masses of brig ht lig h t a rranged in columnar form— the rays pro per—which take the direction of the magnetic dip. AU the luminous emissions of a radia ting character in other directions are not to be considered as gen- uine r ays. 8. The heig ht of the base of the rays is various some observations ma- king; it from 80 to 140 miles , nnd the grea t- est height not exceeding 16 0 miles. 9. The heig ht of the summit of the rays in ex- tende d auroras teaches 290 miles , some- times 400 , tho maximum being 000. 10. The rays always have wliito li ght below , aud pass at the summit into red. Sunstroke. —About a year since I saw , in a newspaper , an account ol a case of sunstroke , written by the party himself. After sufferin g a long time from the at- tact , and having t o a considerable degree recovered , he experi enced Millcrin g even from the rays of the moon. This led him to the reflection that it was not altogether the lieafc of tho sun that produced pros tra- tion. After much researc h ho discover ed thnt tho injury camo from the chemical ray, and not I roni tlio lieat ray. Ho was guided to this by observing tho fact that a photograph could not bo tnljen through yellow glass. Accordin gl y ho lined his ha t with two linings—ono of tho oran ge yellow , to arrest the chemical my, and ono of green , to a rrest tho heat ray. Thus prepared ho went where the rays of the sun wero most intense with porfecr ini* punity. It is well known that tho negro is seldom or never sunstruc k ; tho color of his skin over tho sku ll being of the ormi^e yellow may asMst in accounting for the fact. I practised upon this suggestion nil last Hummer; , lined my hat with green nnd ornngo yellow p aper , and had confidence enough in tho truth of tlio theory to neglect my unbrolln , which I hnd never done before. 1 mentioned it to ninny, who tried it nlso , nnd In all cases t ha t ' cnino under my observation they uniforml y as- serted that the oppressive hent ol tho huh upon tlio head was much relieved, Deem- ing fills discovery of grout value to the world , I fond you tlio onnlos»d, To J .MPnovK . Honard was ar- rested by the Spanish authorities for par- ticipa tion in the insurrection , was after- ward tried , convicted , sentenced , and im- prisoned. He appealed to the United States for its interposition in his behalf , claiming to be a native-born citizen. On inquiry , the State Department ascertain ed that he was born in the United States iu 1815 , that bis father was a native French- man , who was naturalized as a citizen of the United States about 1803 ; that when Dr. Houard was five years of a ge , as he alleges , his father emi grated , ns n colonist , wi th this son and other member s of his famil y, to Cicnfucgos , C uba , and contin- ued to reside there until the dny of his dea t h ; that the son (Dr. Houard ,) also con tinued to reside in Cuba unti l the dny of his arrest , nearl y fifty years , with the exception of three or four years while he was at tending college in Philadelphia.
