To Make Hard Water So.t. —Take nn ounce of fresh lime and stir it well in a bucket of water , and as soon as it settles , tbe water will be soft and fit for use , as it w ill drive all impurities to tbe bottom. Rivir water , when mudd y, is better to d rink by this process. Ti. \ rt Fresh Fish. —Ha-**e the fish well scalded , w ashed and drained ; cut sl ashes in the sides of each ; season them with salt nnd pe pper , and roll them in c orn u-jur ; have in your frying pan not Ja rd or bjcon dripp ings ; dip them in egg b efore rolling them in corn flour , to keep the m from brea king. Thb Plaster Pr oblem. — If some scien tific farmer wishes to distinguish himself , let him solve the riddle of g yp- sum. In hundreds of coses a bushel of p laster on an acre of clover has doubled th e yield. Scores have applied it with no perceptible gain. Inland it generall y works b etter than on tbe sea-coast. If salt in the air is g iven as the reason , some fa rmer 30Q miles from the ocean will say that he always mixes sal t with plaster and its action is increas ed and made certain by it. A writer in the Ohi o)Frtrmer tells us that it absorbs ammonia. Unless we know when there is ammonia in the air for it to absorb , that statement does not hr-l p the matter. A chemist an al yzing the a sh of a crop would find little or no sul phate of lima. His inference would be th at it cannot furnish p lan t food ; but s ometimes it makes crops grow wonder- ful l y. Wh o can tell the farmers of the country wh y it fails when it fails , and bow it operates when it promotes vege- table growth ? Cows. —In the N. \E. Farmer we find an accoun t of an experiment made by a member of the Essex , Mass., Agricultu- ral Society, which was substantially as follo ws : Four cows were selected from his herd when his postures were parched with excessive drouth . Two of them were fed ni ght and morning, with g reen corn-stalk s , as much as th ey would eat. The other two were fed with En glish hay of medium quality, as much as they would eat , all goin g in the same pastur e during the day. Their milk was care- fully measured. After about two weeks their feed was changed ; those that had been fed on corn were fed with hay, and those that had been fed on liny were fed with corn for about two weeks longer , and the milk cart iully measured. Tbe result was near l y the , sttrae. There was no percep tible difference in the quan tity of mil'* , produced when fed ou green corn fodder or English hay. He came to the conclusion , therefore , that it is much more profi table feeding on green corn fodder than on hay, as it costs much le ss. He adds , however , that corn fodder should not be used until it has nearl y reached its growlh , in the blossom , as it then possesses more nutriment than when cut earlier. It should not be sowed too thick , or grow in tbe shade. F sxmlionie Hotel. The y have some model policemen in Ne w York. Take the following as an il- lustration. A policeman went into s saloon seized hold of s man who w as standing near the counter , and withou t any word of exp lanation , began beating him over the head and face w ith his heavy ni ght-servi ce club. In a few seconds the man ' s features wer e beyond reco gnition and seemed nothin g more than a mass ot raw flesh. The man who -vaj thus assaul t- ed was John B.
