Farmhouie BTotea. Sugar Beets fob Swine. —A writer in the P ractical Farmer Bays that he finds th e sugar beet very good to futten his hogs with. He beg ins with the beets and finishes off on corn. As the resul t of his ex perience , he f ound that his hogs fattened earlier , with a material saving of corn. Potatoes. —I once limed some pota- toes , says a correspondent , and found that they . could n ot be boiled soft. I couldn 't eat them hard , and I did not thi nk it would bo honest to snll them , so I th rew them away. I would not ap- p l y limn as some do , e ven to dry the pieces when they ore cut for seed. S orrel. —I have seen , says Mr. Stew- art in the fanner ' s club , old lim e-kilns perfectly green with a growth of sorrel. The . fact is that no farmer who produces 4 0 or 50 but hels of corn per acre , or two tons of ha y, e ver complains of being troubled wi th sorrel. If the soil is well m n nil red the crops yrow freely, and sorrel , as well as other weeds , become smothered and killed out: Curb fob Whist ciIno in Horse s. — I ha ve tried the following, and cured a hor se that whistled badl y. The :reoipe was furnished me by a skilled horseman. Put from 10 to 20 drops of spong ia tos ' a on the tongue of the animal in thf mor ning ; and at night the same propor- tion of f owler ' s Solution , in the same manner. Repeat alternatel y from four to mx weeks , giving more or less accord- in g to the severit y of the case. To Pre pare Rhubarb for Pies ob Tarts. — Cut the jtnlk s fiom the plant , riddin g .hern of their leaves. With a knifu scra pe oil the outer skin , and cut transversely into little pieces , bein g sure . to remo ve any fibres that adhere , just a a you do in stri nging beans. . To each pound of this substitute for fruit allow half a pound of su gar if for immediate usa , one pound if desi gned to keep as i. -eserve. The addition of u li ttl e grated lemon rind is esteemed by most persons a great improvement to the flavor . Spice of any kind , however , may be added if fancied. Th is is tho most common use to which rhubarb is put. Mock Goosebebr y-Fooij. —Out u p and scra pe as muoh rhubarb as will be enough to h alf fill a glass bowl of the size you wish to use. Stew in enou gh water to cover it well. When tender , rub throu g h n colander to a smooth pulp. To a quart of the fruit , - well sweetened and flavored with lemon p eel , add a ;inart of sweet cream , stirred smoothl y in till well mixed. Heap the bowl u p high with whipped syll:> bub. If you have nn cream , substi- tute a quart of custard , made with the yolks of six eggn. In place ¦ ;? tho sylla- bub , use the whisked whites of the six eggs , sweetened with ' six tabi esp non fills of tine white sugar , and brown the top sli ghtl y with a hot salamander or clean shovel. -_-— - _____»______—______, A sallow or yellow color of skin , or yellowish brown spots on face and other parts of bod y ; dullness and drowsineas with frequent headache ; dizziness , bitter or bad ' taste in mouth , dryness of throat , and intern al heat ; ' pal p itation , in many cases a dry teasin g cough , with bore throat , unstead y a ppetite , a raising of food , and a choking sensation in throat ; distress , heaviness , or bloated or full fe el- ing about - stomach and' sides , pai n in sides , back or breast , and about shoul- ders ; colic, pain and soreness thr ong)' bowels , with heat ; constipation , alterna- ting with freqnent attacks of diarrhoea ; piles , flatulence , nervousness , coldness of extremities ; rush of blood to head , with s ymptoms of apoplexy, numbness of limbs , especially a t night ; ' cold chills alternatin g wi th hot flashes , kindey and urinar y difficulties ; female weakness and irregularities , with dullne ss , low spirits , unsociability and gloom y forebodings. All who use Dr. Pierce ' s Golden Medic al Discovery for Liver Complaint and i ts complications are loud in its praise. Sold by all druggists every where. 601. The Supreme Question. —Health i s the mos t important of c-artbly blet>fin^s , and therefore the n ervous anxiety of the sick to ascertain the relative merits of the vari ous ' .iied icines in use is not surprisin g. Wi thin the last two years many thousands of invalids have abandoned tbo prepara- tions of the ph&rmacoDoli st for the remed y introduced b y Dr. Walker , of California , under the somewhat , eccentric name ot Vinegar Bitters. That this new Vege- table medicine is *' winnin g golden opin- ions of al l sorts of people \ is beyond a doubt. Tbe accounts we bear ot its ex- traordinary effects in cases of chronic ' d ys- pe rjBta , rheumatism , liver complaints , ma- larious fiver *, nervous prostrations and many o t ' icr distressing diseases , certainly justify the popularity which it has every- where acquired. Dr. Walker claims for his .p ecific a remedial power over ' all dis- orders that do not involve an irreparable des truction of bone and fibre , and re s ults so far appear to h ave justified the claim. In this age of wonders w e are not disposed to deny the possibility of any p henomena not directly at variance with the laws oi na t ure , and as it is held b y many physiol- ogist- thnt all malad ie. proceed from tbe sumo generic cause , we nee no reiwm for the incredulity with which some peop le regard tlm idea of a Universal Medicine. Dr. Wnlk-r ' s preparation seems destined to he universally approved. — Com. $100 , $500 and $1 , 000 Bailrond Bonds for sale and profitable investments. Write to Charles W. SOCTHW TSTilRN STOCK-RAISING. —Stock- raising is carried on in the Southwest on a scale of grandeur which is almost incon- ce ivable to persons living in the vicini ty o f the great cities of the North and Eaht v/h ere land is worth ten thousand dollars an acre , the corner lots sometimes sell for a hundred thousand dollars ap iece. For example , there is a farm , or r_uche , in Texas , which contain s one hundred and for ty-two thousand forty-ei ght and acres. It. is know as Rolideaux Ranche , and lies between the Neuces an d Rio Grande rivers. I t is a peninsula , running far out into the Gulf of Mexico , and tbe head of i t is guarded b y thirty miles of p lank fence , wi th herdsmen ' s residence at in tervals of three miles along the whole distance. If a man hud a farm in this re gion as large as tbe island of New York , it would be looked upon us a pre tty good -sized piece of real es tate ; but t his Texas ranche is m ore thnr. ten times as large as tbe island of New Yo rk. And it is stocked on a scale commesiirat e wi th its extent. Thirty thousand beef cattle , and tens of thousands of horses , mules and sheep l ' c»d over its grass y stretches , and yiel d a vast revenue to their owner. There are other ranches in Texas , comprising reaiicctivel y over a hundred squire miles—sixty four thousand acres—and stocked by thousands upon thousands of cattle , horses , mules and sheep. And so favorable to stock- raising nro the soil and climate of that State , that tbe increase of stock is said to avoiago twenty-five per cent, per annum . A Lot of Suns— Some astronomers have computed that there are no less than 79 , 000 , 000 sun« in tbo universe. The mother . sug gested that tho boy might ask for him- self. * ' I would ,\ said the boy, \but I don ' t feel well enough acquainted with him. \ There is a sharp reproof to tho father in thf. rep ly of his son. Many a father keeps his children so at a distance from him thnt they never feel c onfidently acquainted with him. They feel that he is a sort of monarch in the family. They fool no fa- miliarity with him. They fear him and respect him , and eve n love him some , for children cannot help loving somebody about them ; but thoy seldom get ne .r enough to him to feci intimate with him They seldom go to him with their wants and trials.
