Mrs. Lewis Horton has returned from the Soldiers and Sailors Me morial hospital in Penn Yan and is convalescing from a recent oper ation at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Nicholas Haich, on Hollister street. Miss Edith Faucett of Ithaca was the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Mel vin Dyke last week Wednesday. /. Dan Rapalee,’ night whtchman for the village, has returned home from the Shepard hospital in Mon tour Falls where he was taken for observation and treatment. Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Hathaway have purchased the Faucett prop erty on Union street. They expect to move there this fall. Announcement is made of the engagement of Miss Mary Roberts, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Roberts, formerly of this place to Kingston E. Phelps, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ira Phelps of Reading Center. The wedding will take place in the near future. Miss Roberts is fifth grade teacher at the Odessa Cen tral school and Mr. Phelps is em ployed by the Ward LaFrance cor poration at Elmira Heights.. Kenneth Denning, son of Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Denning, has re ceived his master’s degree in phy sical education at the Springfield YMCA college at Springfield, Mass. He is visiting his parents here. William Clark, son of Mrs. Lucy Clark of this village, was gradu ated May 23 from the Air Corp Technical School at Lowry Field, Col., where he sas been taking an extensive course of study. He is now advanced to the rank of lieu tenant in the air forces of the US army. He has been assigned to duty at Lowry Field. The program of organ music by Tom Grierson of Rochester and vo cal selections by Mrs. Lawrence Smith, which was given in the Presbyterian church Tuesday eve ning of last week was thoroughly enjoyed by those who attended. The program was varied, including numbers from the old masters, popular songs; hymns and selec tions from modern composers. New officers of the Rotary club for the ensuing year were an nounced by President: E. A. Beers at the meeting last week Wednes day. Evans Morgan, son of Mr, and Mrs. Coral Morgan, of this village was badly burned recently when he slipped and partially fell into a vat of hot brine at the salt plant in Watkins Glen where he is em ployed. JOH N H z ZIM M ERM AN Phone Penn Yan 77-F-13 Rev. Andrew S. Taylor was in stalled last week Thursday eve ning as pastor of the First Pres byterian church of Rock Stream. The church which has undergone extensive repairs was opened for the first time. A new ceiling and sidewalls of celotex greatly im proves its appearance. A new ma roon color velvet carpet was laid, new hymnals were purchased, a beautiful American flag was also presented, and last but not least a fine new electric organ. Twelve new tables, each seating eight per sons were presented to be used in the hall. All these gifts came from the sons and daughters of Mrs. Maria Peelle. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Newcomb and son of Geneva. Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Austin ana son of Port Byron, and Mrs. Earl Laraby and daughters of Lyons were dinner guests on Sunday of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Allen. Mr. and Mrs. Leon King and Daniel Rachel of Scranton, Pa., were week-end guests of Mrs. Katherine Salmon. Mrs. Timothy Keady had as her guests over the week-end, Mr. and Mrs. H. Sangler of Erie, Pa. Mrs. A. J. Millard is spending this week at her home in Himrod. Mrs. Harry Jessop has the measles. The childen of Mr. and Mrs. Leon Hall have the mumps. [ Mr. and Mrs. H. Axtell were inj town over the week-end. Many of the defense workmen in this town stuck to their jobs Mr. and Mrs. Ray Woodley of Cleveland were at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Porter in Penn Yan on Saturday and Sunday. Mr. Woodley lived with the Porters on their farm on the point for four years. He was at church Sunday morning and met many old friends. Mrs. George McDermott is shar ing part time with Mrs, Charles Stryker in caring for Mrs. Mal colm Derr, who is still confined to her bed. Commissioner Perry Henderson was in Albany on Thursday at a one-day welfare • conference. Mrs. Irene Conklin had as guests on Sunday # her brother, Elisha Northrup and wife, and her neph ew ,1 Carlton Northrup and wife, and two children of Ovid. Mrs. John Conklin of Penn Yan spent Thursday of last week at the home of Mrs. Eleanor Moore. Mrs. Clarence Breed is caring for Mrs. James Sanderson. George Barrow of Buffalo was the Saturday and Sunday guest of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Barrow. Joseph Barrow, jr., em ployed in Buffalo came home with his brother, George, for a week end visit with his family. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Longwell of Elmira spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Derr. Lillian Breed, a senior at Penn Yan Academy, was at home for three days last week with grip. This absence from' school meant much to Polly as it broke a per fect five-year record of attendance in Penn Yan school. Jim Murphy, a native of Him rod died at the Soldiers and Sail ors Memorial hospital on Satur day, May 30. He had been at Es- peranza for 26 years and had made many friends. He was employed in the kitchen. Andrew Decker is employed at the Mercury plant in Hammonds- port. Mr. and Mrs. Whitney Larzelere accompanied by Mrs. Nellie Purdy, Mrs. Frances Moore, and Mrs. Morris Burke were in Hall on Fri day afternoon attending the funer al of their cousin, George Hew- son. Mrs. Helen Williams is recover ing from the bruises and shock of a bad fall which she suffered last week Wednesday in her kitchen at home. The June meeting of the WSCS will be held this week Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at the home of Mrs. Charles Stryker. Glecker, proprietors of Bubbling Springs inn, have closed the inn and are moving back to Elmira., Willard Boardman, son of Mrs. Lulu Boardman, has received bis commission as a second lieutenant in the medical corps of the US army. Spencer at tended the Northern Baptist con vention at Cleveland, O., last week. Maurice Jayne has gone to Quantico, Va., where he ’is em ployed in construction work. The Dundee Townsend club will hold its next regular meeting on Friday evening, June 5 at 8:30 o’clock. All friends of the organi zation are most cordially invited to attend these meetings. Kittle and Kenneth, jr., are spending the summer months at Strasburg, Pa., with Mr. Kittle where he is employed. --------- V ---- - — Two Presidents Lost Sight of One Eye Two recent presidents were one-eyed, according to some au thorities. Theodore Roosevelt, who had weak eyes since childhood, lost the sight of one eye from an injury received in a boxing con test in the White House. Presi dent Woodrow Wilson became . blind in his right eye from a retinal hemorrhage. --------- V --------- .
