Y„ THURSDAY, APRIL £9, 1926 Whole Number 5321 OUTLOOK FOR YATES COUNTY GRAPE GROWERS NONE TOO BRIGHT * Many Carloads from California Vineyards Sold in Finger Lakes Region—Our Total Crop Last Year Equalled but 50 Per Cent of One Day’s Shipment from That State—Packing and Shipping Problem With p r a c t ica lly a n o r m a l c r o p o f grapes in this s e c t i o n in 1921 636 c a r loads were sh ip p e d b y ra il fr o m Y a t e s county w h ile in 1925, w i t h b u t 5 5 % of a crop, 573 ca r s w e r e s h i p p e d . It was estim a t e d b y d e a l e r s a n d growers that in 1921 o n e - h a l f th e c r o p was m oved to m a r k e t in e i t h e r th e truck of the g r o w e r s o r b y c i t y tru c k - orb. On th a t b a s is 1,272 c a r l o a d s ('.iiinimum o f ten to n s e a c h ) w o u l d equal a norm a l c r o p fo r Y a t e s c o u n t y . A 55% crop w o u ld b e 700 c a r s o r la s t year's crop, O f th e s e 573 m o v e d b y rail, which w o u ld le a v e but 1 8 % o f last year's cro p th a t w a s m o v e d b y trucks. T h is is a s m a l l p e r c e n t a g e considering th a t a la r g e n u m b e r o f growers p u r c h a s e d I r u c k s fo r th e e x press purpose o f h a u l i n g th e i r o w n grapes to the m a r k e t s th a t a r e w i t h i n trucking d istan c e . The grape in d u s t r y b r i n g s a p p r o x i mately one m illio n d o l l a r s in t o Y a t e s county annually am i its s u c c e s s is o f vital im p o r tance to th is c o m m u n i t y , but our little c r o p m a k e s v e r y little impression ou the m a r k e t , o u r 573 cars last year a m o u n t e d to a b o u t o n e - sixth of the g r a p e s p r o d u c e d in N e w York stale but r e p r e s e n t e d le s s th a n one-half of on e d a y ’ s s h i p p i n g fr o m the state of C a lifo r n ia .
