Mrs. Brigham was much concerned about the opening bid. She thougjit her hand was just a trifle short of the requirements for an opening 2 bid and feared th a t her partner might pass a pre-emptive bid of 4 or an opening bid of 1, as she anticipated the possibility of a stom. She therefore compromised on an opening bid of 3 Spaides. The North hand is similar to a type hand recommended by Culbertson as a 3 bid, but would be opened with a bid of 1, by . both the Sims and Four Aces systems. If the hand is opened with 1 Spade, a jump to 3 Hearts by the South hand would lead to the fliwl grand Slam contract just the same. It is interesting to note that the use of the Blackwood Convention would not aid In reaching the grand slam.
