Tel. 97 DEPARTMENT STORE GREENPORT Mattituck H. S. Wins Sectional Soccer Pennant Shutout Sog Harbor 1 - 0 fe Cap ture Championthip For Third Time By turning back Sag Harbor 1 to 0 last Friday afternoon the Mattituck High School Soccer team clinched its third sectional championship in the last five years. The game, which was played at Sag Harbor was a bard fought one bringing two well coached scholastic elevens. It was not until the final quarter that Mattituck was able to break the ice and It was Teddy Orohoski, center for the champions, who finally turned the trick. Oohoskl dribbled the ball down the entire field after breaking up a Pierson threat near his own goal and finally pushing it through the Sag Harbor goalie for what tu n e d out to be the only score of the game. Throuc^out the entire first three periods It was a nip and tuck contest with first the home team taking the of fensive and then the visitors taking the baU down the field in an attempt to score. The defensive play on the part of both teams was outstanding and the work of the two goalies, Jaz- ombek for Mattituck, and De Castro for Sag Harbor deserves special men tion. Many consider this the best team turned out by Coach Muir in his five years of coaching at Mattituck. Fri day’s game was the fourth straight shut-out turned in against league op ponents. Starting off the section season with a 3 to 2 win over Center Moriches, the Muirmen then turned in a 6 to 0 shut-out over Shelter Island and Whitewashed Hampton Bays 5 to 0, Center Moriches 1 to 0 and Sag Harbor 1 to 0 in that order. Another feather in the cap of Coach Muir is the fact that this is his third championship team in a row having won the basket ball and baseball pennants in this section last year. Mattituck plays at Brldgehampton today (Thursday) in their final league game of the season. H ie wtcome of this game will have no bearing on the championship for Mattituck by its win o v e r Sag Harbor mathematically clinched top honm . This newspaper Joins in congratula ting Coach Muir and the Miattltuok High School Soccer team for their splendid record. “Hats off to the new champs.” THE LIMEOT Pos. Mattituck Sag Harbw L.W. Marked by the return to the line up of Joe Buekin and Ray Dean O. H. S. looked more like the team which start ed off the iseaa^g so auspiciously. With these two boys the bench because of injuries, the^'team had dropped 3 straight gam » a ^ there is no doubt now th a t the team suffered greatly in their absence. As m le^t be^^iqiieeted on such a day, there were fumbles and blocked kicks gatore but even so Southampton was unable to advance the ball past the Oreenport 25 yard line. Aside from their two swift scoring thrusts, Oreen port was able to do very Uttle In an offensive way and their first down total for the day was two. Southamp ton likewise foiuid the slippery going imiffegnable and though their first down total was four, no two came In succession and none for more than 15 yards. Southampton was first to threaten when they recovered a fumble on Oreenport’s 25; Pour plays later, having made no gain, Butler dropped back and tried a field goal which was both wide and short. Buekin entered the game at this point and from then on Oreen port had a distinct advantage in punt-- ing and succeeded in bringing the ball to midfield simply on the exchange of a few punte. Midway in the second period, with the ball on the 50 yard line Buekin passed to Rogers on the 30 who ran to the 4 before being brought dov.n from behind. Buekin tried the center of the line and picked up two. Two more attempts a t ttie line showed no sain but on the fourth down Joe took it off tackle for the re maining 2 yards and the score. ’The try for point failed. Oreenport’s next bid came in the fourth pericd atfer Southampton had gamUed on,, jlowa pass and failed. On t|K ^n^u play Ttli^er broke through t6 smdther G u m , who had dropped back tc punt, before the lat ter could pick up a poor pass frran center and It was Oreeqport’s ball on Southampton’s 25. Buekin up 6 yards around end and then faJting a wide end run passed the ball 20 yards to Rogerii, way d^wn In “coffin comer.” Russ Wells kicked the extra point. From then on the seccnd team took over and ^eld the opponents for the rest of the game. There is no game scheduled for this Saturday but the season will be offic- iaUy closed on ,the 16th when South Huntington plays here. S. 0 0 0 4 Teams Tied For First Place In Southold League Vail Brothers Win First Match Taking Two From Old Town Flayers Four teams are now tied for first rlace in the Southold Bowling League as a resi^Jt of the outcome of last week’s matches. With eight victories and four defeats to their records, the Long Island Produce & Fertilizer Co., the Polish Trio,\ the Southold Yacht Club and Benny’s Tavern are now leading the pack after four weeks of bowling. . The Southold Yacht Club with Pink Cochran showing the way, continues to be the class of the league as far as high averages and games are con cerned. Pink has: the high individual average of the league with a mark at 171 while the team average now stands at 162. In their match last week with the Long Island Produce and BtertlU- zer Company Trio, who at the time held undisputed possession of first place, the Yacht Club boys won two out of three and lost the other game by a margin of one pin. The Polish TWo, who this writer picks for either first or second place In the final league standing, won two out of three in their match with Phil’s Tavern. After losing the opening game, Izzy, Joe and Adam really went to town and left no room for argument on the outcome of the last two games. Although their bowling wasn’t any thing to write home about, Benny’s Tavern showed a little improvement over their medium scores of the first few matches to r.in three straight from the floundering Postal Trio. It was cu’y because the lalter team !-'.s failed tc hit i\3 stride of last sensch that the Tavern boys were able to dish out the whitewash and net. because cf an;- great ability on their part. It it wasn’t for “Stel” this year, Lloyd and Charlie would have been left far behind in the current race, (We wouldn’t blame “Stel” if he get tired of carrying his othpr two teammates after a while). Vail Brothers having failed to win a game up until last week, not only won their fi^ t contest kut tock the from theh: opponents the Old Town Players. The latter team was Just barer ly able to cop one of the three games. SOUTHOLD BOWLING LEAGUE ARCADE Dept. Stor;; 14 > 18 F r t n t S t r e e t G ftE E N P O R T , N. Y.
