WILL CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS WHILE E PASSING OF A FAMOUS HOSTELRY H.'over Party Complete* Tour of i.atin America—President-Elect Brings Back Many Gifts From Brazil—Ship Leaves Rio Amid Fireworks Display U. S. S. Utah, Dec. 24.— (JP)— Horaewarrt bound, haring conelu'ied his tour of good will In Lntln-Amerlca, Herbert Hoover turned his thoughts to Christmas which will be oelebrated aboard ship tomorrow In true Amerl can style. Before sailing from Rio Janotr?, the Utah took aboard a Christmas tree and decorations. Ship’s carpenters were busy today setting up the tree and also tables on the quarterde.-kfor a general dinner to the Hoovers (.ml the ship’s officers. Many presents were brought aboard the ship to enliven the spirit of the occasion. To most of the Hoover party, Christmas Day aboard a .ship was a novel expedience but to Mr. and Mrs. Hoover It was nothing tmusuul, since their first Christmas after their m ar riage was on shipboard while they- were en route to China and they had been a t sea several times since then. Upon boarding the ship, .Mr. Hoover found a number of presents awaiting him as well as others of his party arid he found a doctor’s degree from Brazil he found a doctors degree iroai lim it University as well as a certificate as honorary chairman of the Brazilian Red Cross enclosed in a handsome portfolio. Mr. Hoover is a trustee of the American Red Cross and on taking over the presidency will become presi dent of the American organization. Other gifts from Brazil included a set of books on engineering and other subjects, a dozen boxes of cigars and a picture of Rio Janeiro, the picture he probably treasured most highly as he was. more Impressed, with the Brazil ian capital than any other port visited in the long yenrs .of his travels- In bidding farewell to Rio Janeiro, Mr. I-Ioover stood on the deck as the Utah passed out to sea and amid a wonderful display of fireworks. The display began opposite the anchorage of the TTtah and lasted until the mouth of the harbor, four miles distant, was reached. Both Mr. and Mrs. Hoover stood by the rail watching the display which eminated from myriad moun tains as the searchlights of the Utah criss-crossed in answer to the most colorful farewell that Mr. Hoover re ceived 011 his whole Latln-American tour. As Mr. Hoover sailed away the whole Brazilian capital wns ringing with cheers and praises for him. The general opinion was. that he carried with him the genuine friendship, ad miration and esteem of the Brazilian people. This had been manifested in unparalleled pageantry during his visit and in spontaneous popular outbursts. President Luis went to the Utah to say a. final won! of farewell before, the ship sailed north for Key West, Fla'. Caroline Hibbard Worthy Matron of O. E. S.
