To save - some sunken treasures of ' ships that- linv.e been sent to the bottom forms one mo tive of the tale. But there is,-'.'in addi tion, a skull shaped, pearl upon wliich a man’s, life depends ; a lovely girl, kid napped by her villainous relatives; a submarine built-on a startling plan; South Sea Island adventures—enough thrills, it is declared, to make the or dinary adventure' picture seem tame in comparison. Above all, Houdinin himself in un derwater stunts that draw upon his exceptional powers to the last degree is the outstanding feature of the pic ture. He escapes from closely bound safe while under water,* fijVits a smashing battle with a diver on the bed of tho ocean, and performs other hair-raising feats tliat are declared to surpass anything he has ever done on the stage. Lila ieo is the leading woman for IIoucl, tni, and Jack Brainmall, Rose mary Theby, Wilton Taylor, Eugene Pallette, Edward Brady, Frank Bon ner, Captain Ted Duncan, and Fred Turner are in the supporting cast. The story was written by Arthur B. Reeve and John W. Gre* and scenarized by Walter Woods. James Cruze directed, the picture, which is a Paramount Art- craft. According to House Peters, starring in his flrst big special release, “Silk Husbands and Calico Wives,” the day has arrived when iutelligent men and women are finding many truths of daily living, moro strongly exemplified in tho fiction marts of tho great mo lion picture centers than ever before realized. In depicting the role of the struggling lawyer, tlie leading charac ter in Monte M. Katterjohn’s true to life drama. Mr. Peters has discovered more truths of daily living, more in spiration to climb the ladder of en deavor to ultimate success than has ever before fallen his lot The story brings out in striking realism the need of young men fighting for the estab lishment of an ideal, declares Mr I'etcrs.
