T h a t was follow ed by Santa’s arrival at the Village Tree Lighting C e rem o n y in A rgyle Park on Sunday, Dec. 5th followed by the W assail Bowl at the Babylon Village H istorical Society M u seum . The tree lighting, hosted annually by the Baby lon Business and Professional W o m en’s Club, and th e W assail Bowl, hosted annually by the Babylon Village H istorical and Preservation So ciety, are m u c h anticipated holidays traditions. A d rienne Cavallo o f L indenhurst was o u t s h o p ping w ith her two young sons on Friday evening and was delighted w ith the m e rchant event - the first one she has ever a ttended. “I am having a g reat tim e . I found a lot of shops I didn’t know about,” she said. “I a lready bought tw o C h ristm a s gifts.” D o w n the street, on the grounds o f the M e th odist C h u rch, Cub Scout Pack 99 was selling fresh C h ristm a s trees and w reaths. . It was the first such fundraiser for the scouts. The historic C o n k lin H o u se on D e e r Park Av enue, brightly lit and decorated, w elcom e d visi tors to view its perio d room s, each decorated distinctively for the holiday season. A highlight of “C h ristm a s at the C o n k lin H o u se” is the an- (Continued on page 3) IN THE NEWS J& , .m F m WISD sets public hearing on tax exemptions fo r firefighters The Board of Education of the West Islip School District has scheduled a special Public Hearing for Thurs., Jan. 13, 2011 to address the Volunteer Fire fighters Property Tax Exemption. This meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the West Islip High School Au ditorium. The Public Hearing has been scheduled pursuant to Educational Law Section 466-c to address a pos sible property tax exemption on volunteer firefight ers’ residences. New York State law allows for partial property tax exemptions for volunteer firefighters in an incorporated volunteer fire company or fire de partm ent, as authorized by the governing body of a school district. The state enacted the law as a way for communities to express appreciation to volunteer firefighters and to recruit new fire departm ent m em bers. Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center recently held its eighth annual lighting of the Nativity scene in anticipation of Christmas. Employees of the medical center were joined by representatives from the com munity, including Town of Islip Assemblyman Philip Boyle and Suffolk County Treasurer Angie Carpen ter. Following the singing of carols, accompanied by Sr. Mary Anna Euring on the flute, Good Samaritan’s Vice President o f Administration, Dominick Alese in troduced Fr. Cletus Nwaogwligwu, who blessed the crèche and the group. A choir from St. John the Bap tist High School sang Silent Night and were invited by Mr. Alese to assist in formally lighting the display. “The Nativity lighting is one o f the hallmarks of Good Samaritan’s being a Catholic institution,” noted Mr. Alese, after welcoming guests, who braved the cold to participate. Members o f the Medical Center’s Board o f Trustees, Good Samaritan physicians, administration person nel and other employees were among those who at tended. All were invited to continue the festivities in the main lobby o f the hospital, with complimentary Christ mas tree ornament keepsakes, cookies and hot choco late.
