Red Ribbon Week commemo rates DEA Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, who was killed by drug traffickers during one of his mis sions, Each student received a red rib bon, red bracelets, a red pencil and a Twizzler, which they were encouraged to wear and use throughout the week. Students and teachers wore shirts and posted banners that had slogans such as Use Your Head - Wear Red, Team Up Against Drugs, Be All You Can Be, all meant to bring awareness to this cause. I -V \ Live history lessons fo r D e e r Park students As reported in the Summer Lindy Spotlight, Lindenhurst High School teachers Danielle Bottachiari,, Carol Frederico, Jean Jacobs, Tracey Miller, Christine Sanfratello, and John Sloko- vitz have expanded the Academic Re cycled Materials and Supplies (ARMS) program. Since the beginning of the school year, the program« supplied an : add in, tip rial fivebackpacks and assisted two elementary schobl WofkeWf tvFp^' psychologists from the high school, and several individual teachers. The pro gram received bags of donations from ' community members and employees at the high school. Backpacks, along with lunchboxes, binders, loose-leaf paper, glue sticks, pencils, and folders are distributed to Lindenhurst students throughout the school year. Lindenhurst a r t students get first illustration Deer Park High School hosted a Vet erans Day Symposium this November to pay tribute to the brave men and women who have worked and continue to work to protect the nation. Social studies students spent the morning speaking with and learning from local veterans and active duty soldiers. Ten United States Army and Marine Corps members who served in Vietnam and are currently serving in Iraq and Af ghanistan visited the district and inter acted with students. During the symposium, the soldiers shared their personal experiences and stories of their time in the service as well as described the culture and cli mate of the United States and the lands abroad in which they*if»Hgbt! fAddwi tionally, the veterans and Soldiers ex plained the various missions they were involved in while impressing upon the students that their ultimate mission was to protect America and the coun try’s freedoms. All of the soldiers’ sto ries echoed characteristics of strength, courage and teamwork, as well as the strenuous tactical and physical training soldiers endure. The students gained a unique perspective on the roles of sol diers during times of war and peace and were able to compare and contrast wars throughout history. Shown in the photo, Deer Park High School students had the opportunity to meet United States veterans and active duty soldiers as part of the school’s Vet erans Day SymppStitM* * r<fM l K a * l< u Photographer Brittny Badger visited Jill Singer’s Advanced Placement Art and Portfolio Workshop classes at Lin denhurst High School and spoke with students about preparing portfolips for college. She represented the Hartford Art School, which is affiliated with the University of Hartford in Connecticut. Badger explained the eight art ma jors that her school offers, including photography, drawing and painting, illustration, media arts, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, and visual com munication design. An accompanying slide show detailed each area of art. Badger showed some of her artwork, as well as slides of other high school students’ portfolios, to give students an idea of what admissions at colleges are seeking. She also explained that the Hartford Art School offers many ar tistic merit scholarships in addition to academic scholarships. Her advice to students included, “Visit as many schools as possible and talk to as many people as possible.” Shown in the photo, Advanced Place ment Art and Portfolio Workshop stu dents learn about college options for art students.
