Babylon Village is now wired for Wi-Fi in its business district, the first in Suffolk County to do it. “Our business district is hot,” stated Legislator Wayne Hoarsley at a press conference at Barrique Kitch en and Wine Bar, on Deer Park Avenue in Babylon Vil lage on November 23,2010. Efforts like these is part of what makes Babylon Village “recession proofT continued Hoarsely, who secured the needed $25,000 to install the Wi-Fi antennas on poles and rooftops in the district. Hoarsley the expense an “investment into the future” and part o f the reason why “businesses want to be in Babylon Village ... The stores are open; there are not a lot of vacancies,” he said. “This is a thriving business community” Babylon Village resident Wally Levins, owner of Coastal Island Treasures, agrees. He might not be that excited about people browsing Windows on their computer, but the window shopping they do afterward can really help his livelihood. “If people come by for a business lunch, they have to walk and pass by shops,” said Levins, whose business is crammed with nautical niceties. “I get a lot of my cus tomers that way. Even at night, they walk by and peek into my shop and will come back the next day or the next weekend.” The Wi-Fi hub covers the gazebo on Main Street, East to Route 231 and from the intersection of Main Street and Deer Park Avenue, north to the railroad trestle, down to the marina. The chamber and Village are still working to strength en Wi-Fi capabilities by hooking into the internet con nections o f the businesses that line the district. Also òn hand that day was Mayor Ralph Scordino, President of the Babylon Village Chamber of Commerce Jon Taylor, Bill Wolf o f Barrique and president of Cor porate Bizness Quintin. “These are challenging times. We are in such a com petitive marketplace, why not have every advantage in the community? Things like this makes Babylon Village a more attractive destination... Now, Babylon Village has a vibrant downtown with shops and restaurants, an interesting history and now, “It’s cool,” according to Legislator Wayne Horsely. Babylon Village will be the first Village on Long Island to offer free wireless internet to businesses, residents and visitors in its downtown area - within a month, accord ing to the plan. This on the heels of Babylon Supervisor Steve Bellone’s announcement, last week, that the town of Copiague will install wireless devices in its downtown area. On November 5th, Dr. Kirdahy s widow and son visited the school and Mrs. Kirdahy read to students. She told those in attendance, “Words cannot express how happy and proud we are to present our favorite children’s books to Kirdahy stu dents. We are thrilled to be here.” Dr. Kirdahy died just prior to the couple’s 55th wedding anniversary. He was the school’s principal when it was known as the Captree School and later sefved as superintendent of schools for West Islip. Among the books donated were “Goodnight Moon,” dedicated by Konnor Kay, a grandson of Dr. Kir dahy, and “The Giving Tree,” donated by Kerrin Kirdahy, a granddaughter.
