Gregory sponsors Island Harvest holiday food drive Sagtikos Manor Historical Society program to begin November 16 The Sagtikos M anor Historical Society will present a program entitled Conservation and Restoration o f Heir loom Textiles, Tues., Nov. 16, 7 p.m. at the Higbie Ln. Community Center, 90 Higbie Lane, West Islip. Learn to preserve heirlooms and family treasures. The dem onstration will include antique items from the Sagtikos M anor costume collection as well as other artifacts from the house. The program is open to the public. S.C. Leg. Gregory (D-Amityville) will be sponsoring an Island Harvest holiday food drive on Sun., Nov. 14, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Stop & Shop, 351 Merrick Rd., Am i tyville. Leg. Gregory and volunteers will be collecting the m ost needed items, such as powdered milk, peanut butter, canned meat, soup and stews, cereal fruit juices (shelf stable), tuna, pasta, rice, beans, baby food and p er sonal hygiene products*. Leg. Gregory recently met with Randi Shubin-Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest to address the critical and growing issue of hunger in our comm u n i ties. Island Harvest supplies food to a network of more than 570 soup kitchens, pantries, shelters and feeding programs which serve over approximately 2 8 3 ,000 Long Islanders, including 110,000 children who face the risk of hunger each day. Unfortunately, food donations are on the decline and it is imperative that we do whatever we can to make sure everyone who needs assistance can get i t ' G e m e l l i fine foods “Unfortunately, during these tough economic times, this struggle has become all too familiar for many fami lies as they find themselves seeking help for the first time,” said Legislator Gregory. “M any families are in a difficult position having to choose between paying bills and putting food on their tables.
