O n Sunday, everyone changed the clocks, falling back one hour as Daylight Saving Tim e ended: The question is, did you also replace the batteries in your fire and carbon m o n o x ide ¿ a r m s ? t Local fire departm ents, as wqll as the International Fire Chiefs Association recom m e n d changing the batteries twice a year to help ensure that they work effectively in case of a fire or a carbon m o n o xide build up in your hom e. And to m ake it easier to remember, they have linked the program with Daylight Saving Time. A properly installed an d tested hom e fire alarm with a fresh battery is one o f the simplest and m o st effective things you can do to protect yourself and your family from a hom e fire, said an official o f the International Fire Chiefs Association. As cold weather kicks in, m o st hom eowners will be turning up their gas o r electric burners and heaters increasing the hazards posed when and if these appli ances malfunction. The 9v batteries for these alarms cost a few dollars, but c a n be priceless in helping to savefives. . ^ : If y o u don’t have fire or carbon m o n o x ide alarms, get them installed a n d i f you haven’t done so already, change those batteries and sleep safe and secure to n ig h t ’ ' j l j i f T1- risj &r NO, NOI T H IS IS nW y 6AVEU NO ONE ELSE' CAN BANS A SAVEL IN THE HOUSE CHAMBERS V EXCEPT ME! jA j r SORRY NANCY, l T TH E PEOPLE HAVE SPO K E N ... As a U S -bom M u slim erican from the Ahm adiyya M u s lim Community, I am often concerned by the recent sentiments expressed in the m edia that com e across as Islamophobic viz. W h e n I attended a; local 9 -11 M emorial Service this year, I was grateful to see that ¡my fellow A m e ricans welcomed m e to take part in the service. Rizw an Alladin ; N o r th Babylon Dear Editor: ^ I oppose the building o f the Cordoba M osque near G round Zerq for the following reasons: •September 11, 2001 was a beautiful clear sunny day, I was at w o rk when we received the horrify ing news that an airplane hit: one; o f the Twin Tow ers in New York City. N o n e o f us understood how an accident: like that could happen on such a clear day? Theft another airplane hit the other tower and we all immediately knew we were under attack. Soon after we learned that yet another airplane hit the Pen tagon. A t th a t m o m e n t I rem em b ered all the other tim e s we were a ttacked! by radical Islamists and real ized that ou r world hasjnow changed forever and for the w o r s t N o t knowing what would happen next, I decided to go to m y daughter’s hom e and watched in stunned h o rror what unfolded soon after. Later on we learned o f a n o ther hijacked airplane that crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. W e could not under stand what A m e rica had done to gam e r such hatred .. i BEACON NEWSPAPERS TheSeacon— the paper that works Postag* PM-Babylon Po«Office,Babylon,NY 11702 i (USPS0396-8000) On«?* m a publishers , inc . “THE PAPER THAT WORKS“ A continalta of oewpapara art editions covering Babylon, tinderhura*. W atching the news and seeing all the cheering, and dancing in the streets, and shouts o f death to A m e rica from Islamic countries was incomprehensible to me. Alm o st 3000 people were m u rdered that day and these people were happy about that? I do not profess jo know the Is lam ic religion but I learned a lot that day. •On the other hand, on September Í 2 t h I could not help but notice the kindness and gentle treatm e n t m o st o f us felt and dem o n strated towards our fellow hum an beings. Granted, som e people dem onstrated instant hatred for M uslims and any of their establish ments. As a Christian I try very hard not to hate, but the desire to build an overw h elm ing M osque in view o f G round Zero called the Cordoba M osque is like sticking a finger in all o f o u r eyes, especially the fam i lies who lost loved ones that day, and it tries m y soul. •Ground Zero is a burial g round for people o f m any different faiths and ethnic backgrounds and anyone who visits there to shed tears o f sorrow should not have to look up and see a rem inder o f the hatred that killed their friends and family m em b ers. Look up the history o f the Cordoba M osque in the year 7 11 in Spain and understand why they want to nam e it C o r doba and build it so near G round Zero. Look up the history o f Islam’s House o f W a r and other divisions within Islam and try to understand the com p lexity of Islam and who they consider infidels. In m y opinion, all this hatred goes back m any cen turies and really has to stop. D o the peaceful Muslims really want people to look at that MoSque and renew their pain and be rem inded that Islam and hatred did this? Don’t we have pain enough? There a re so m any m osques in New York C ity now, and if another is needed, please build it elsewhere. All o f us, Muslims included, need to ask G od to rem o ve the hatred from our hearts, bless us with kindness, and be m o re con scious o f the feelings o f o u r fellow hum an beings.
