2 • BEACON NEWSPAPER, November 11,2010 h -p y , ( I had the good ^ fortune to run into | j | \ Tfeeom *\ Joe Leone recent- » J ly and he told m e ■ k> about the H o n o r I I fftu A C ! Flight Network. He f| fy , TKasuf \ is currently sched- i y . y/ / 4 uled to be on one ■ o f the honor flights f__Q— being m ade during the fall. Each flight carries 80 veterans and takes place from April to Novem b er (avoiding the m onths when bad weather can inter rupt flights). On M ay 29, 2004, President Bush dedicated the W o rld W ar II M em orial to honor “The Greatest Generation,” 5 9 years after the end o f W W II. Regret tably today, very few o f these elderly veterans have the funds, knowledge or strength to com p lete a conventional trip to W ashington D.C. H o n o r Flight Long Island, a non- profit organization created solely to honor Am erica’s veterans for all their sacrifices, flies our nation’s heroes to W ashington, D C to visit and reflect at their m em orials. It is the intention of A Review: H o n o r Flight Long Island to honor as m any o f these selfless “ordinary people who saved the world” as possible by providing them with a trip to visit their m em o rial. This organization operates on dona tions from local and regional organi zations and individuals from across Long Island. The flights, deluxe tour bus service, tee shirts and meals, etc. are FR E E to our veterans. The H o n o r Flight Network is sponsored by South west Airlines, Theragenics, and the Hil ton organization. Top priority is given to W W I I Veterans and the organiza tion will continue to do this so long as funds and volunteers are available. Volunteer guardians, who pay their own way, personally escort the veter ans on the aircraft; accom p a n y them to the m em o rials throughout the day and during the return flight. Leitch recently vis ited Babylon to celebrate the first birth day of their beautiful daughter, Keira, LaGrange Restaurant and Catering by Irene A. Munno I have neither been com m issioned nor invited to write this review. It’s just that m y recent visit to the updated ver sion of the beloved LaGrange Inn was such a pleasant experience, that I can not contain m y enthusiasm. Having heard glowing reports in ref erence to the m enu and service at the centerpiece of W est Islip, som e m e m bers o f m y family and I (seven in total) m ade reservations for a recent Saturday dinner. The m e n u is clearly e c lectic and service is family style. W e tested a signature appetizer called a Meatball M artini: generous sized meatballs served in a large M artini glass with hom em ade m arinara sauce, ricotta and shaved parm esan. The m e n u reads “Simply the best” and there is no argum ent here. The fried calam ari was perfect. W e also tried their spring rolls and chicken wontons, and crab- m eat dumplings, all of which were deli cious. There were sliders and franks for the young folks in our party, and som e of these went hom e with us. W e had Penne ala Vodka with shrimp, Fettuccini Alfredo and Chicken Scar- pariello, grilled asparagus and cream ed spinach. W o rd at our table was that the Penne ala Vodka was absolutely the best ever tasted. If y o u have ever expe rienced “family style” y o u know that the “doggie bags” are part and parcel of the meal. I believe that we probably went hom e with enough leftovers for a c o m plete (iinrief fór'fouf. Thank goodness we chose not to order soup or salad or w e would have needed help exiting the Inn. W e sampled crèm e brulee, cheese cake and M artini M adness which was the large m artini glass plied with scoops o f ice cream and sorbet, fruits, nuts and whipped cream (plus a birthday candle on which to m ake a wish). M y wish is that, on any given evening, the lights o f LaGrange are bright and the dining room s are bustling with people who ap preciate the gem that sits on the north west corner of M o n tauk Highway and Higbie Lane. C h e f Roger W eiderm ann visited our table to check on us, as did Dave Rousso and Scott D iD o n n a (D e n nis G arren was not there on that partic ular evening). The food is four star, the service is four star and, if y o u ’re lucky, you m ay even hear som e “ghost stories” o f the old Inn. The bill cam e to approxim ately $30 per person which included beverages, dessert and tax (gratuity not included). LaGrange - it’s B-A -A -A C K and ready for a m em orable experience! Keira Leitch Babylon Football: Panthers zap Baymen, 29-0 by Tony Spota The Babylon Panthers put up a rock- ribbed defense to eliminate the H am p ton Bays Baym en at Williams Field last Saturday afternoon - a shutout, 29-Zip. It was the playoff opener in the Divi- sionTV quarterfinals. The Black D stifled the Ham p ton at tack, limiting them to a net 71 yards and only five first downs. Led by m id dle linebacker Kieran Donnelly and tackle Nick Brennan, they shut down an offensje that averaged over 25 points per gam e against all” o ther'opponents. M eanwhile on offense, the Big Cats led the way for seven Panther backs who rushed for 235 yards. Tailback Trevor Fudim galloped for 144 yards on 21 carries, often behind fullback Sean Logan who had 49 yards on 8 carries. Q u a rterback Sam Z a m e t was 6 o f 11 for 94 yards in the air. O n their first possession, the Pan thers drove 63 yards on thirteen plays. Fudim followed a host o f b lockers on a sweep a round right end from the 7 -yard line for the touchdow n . They scored a 2-point conversion with Z a m e t pass ing to Fudim on a left look-in over the middle. Four and a half minutes later, the Panthers roared in again. This tim e Jeann C ruz blasted up the gut behind Sanders Shanks and Casey Holgan from the 4 to cap a 59-yard drive. Andrew Hurst added the first of his three extra point kicks. The key play on that drive was a right square-out from Zam et to Steve Loudon, who shucked off tacklers and went 4 3 yards to the Ham p ton 13. The Baym en responded with their best drive taking the ball as far as the Babylon 20. But on fourth and long, Brennan chased Ham p ton’s Robbie King all over tarnation, finally sacking the w iry quarterback for a 16-yard loss and the Panthers took over on downs. Brennan ended their next try as well, with another sack and on the ensu ing punt attempt, an errant pass from center allowed Loudon to nail punter Igor Leite for yet another sack. Babylon then drove from the Bays’ 35 to the 9, but they were stopped on a tipped pass interception at the goal line by Tracey Kennedy. The Panthers scored in the third left guard spot into the pow e r I as a blocking back and led Fudim through a gap between H arrison D ittm eier and Ryan Visgauss. The play went for 30 yards to the Bays’ 14. Four plays later, Brennan leaped on a loose ball in the end zone for a TD. Babylon’s last tally cam e in the final period. They went 75 yards on ten plays with Grant Shannon sweeping the right side from the 8 for the score. C o a ch Rick Punzone looked forward to the ftext enequptef. “W e were fortu nate. Back to back wins against the same o p p o n e n ts always a difficult task. Now we head further into the playoffs for the prize.” Other stuff - There were excellent perform a n ces by the Babylon Pep Band, directed by Angela Turk with rousing stuff throughout the gam e and beauti ful half-tim e precision by the cheer leaders in the last hom e appearances ■for a num b er of seniors. Along with Donnelly’s fine perform a n ce, outside linebackers Nahari Jenkins and Greg Dieterich had a super game. Fudim’s TD was his eighteenth o f the season. For H am p ton Bays, defensive linemen Zach Catz and Sean M u rphy had a sack apiece and King passed ten tim es, c o m pleting seven for 4 8 yards. Earlier in the week, the JV Panthers fell to the Bays JV, 21-14. Other playoff results - In Division IV, top seed Glenn whipped Center M o riches 33-7. Second seed Bayport sm o thered Port Jefferson 58-12 and fourth seed M o u n t Sinai defeated G reenport 41-20. So, the Division semifinals will have M o u n t Sinai at Glenn and Babylon at Bayport. A m o n g our neighbors in the Division II quar terfinals - W est Islip fell to East Islip 3 5 -1 4 and W est Babylon upset N o rth Babylon 15-6. Next up - the Panthers play against the second seed Bayport Phantom s at Bayport, Saturday at 1 pm. In their regular season m eeting on O ctober 15, Babylon upset Bayport loudly, 45- 21. The Phantom s will seek to avenge that defeat and also to justify their pre season top seed selection. They’ll be up for this one.
