Although m y guys are as deep-chested and wasp-waisted as any show dogs, they carry m o re coat which makes, them appear heavier in photographs. They also have thicker manes on their necks which hide the faux lapis and scarab necklace. The wind didn’t co operate either. It blew Skeletons in the Closet and Ghosts o f Halloween Just Past: T i s a sad state of affairs when m y Afghan Hounds are forced to share an Egyptian costum e, especially when the pharaoh crow n keeps slip- skinny skulls, it is a good thing tfrey didffct have a p a r ty to attend, f Halloween is a great ex cuse to take silly pet photos. In 2008, m y Edgar Afghan Poe, turned iptpi C o q n t Dracula; while last year both Afghans “chose”, a M e n e a n them e, disguising them selves as Pancho Villa and his Señorita. This tim e I planned to dress the dogs as a trio of clowns to stage a Pagliacci festival. “Vesti la giubba; here we c o m e !” M y Toy Spaniel, Charlotte, is the spitting image of Em m ett Kelly, plus she already has a few clown outfits. Early in October, I picked up a thrift store clown c o s tume that would need sleeve rem oval to get over Af ghan’s h airy legs. I hated to sacrifice the puffy ruffles. W h en checking the tion A rm y for m o re circus attire, I spied an adults Nefertiti costum e hanging on the rack. W h a t a find. Queen Nefertiti was King Tuts aunt. Send out the clowns; tim e to walk like an Egyp tian. The im agery fits Af ghan heritage. Afghans are an ancient breed. It’s easy to picture their sil houettes alongside the Sphinx in the Sahara. All sighthounds - Greyhounds and Salukis too - trace to the Nile and M esopotam ia at least 5¿000 years ago. There is an unproven claim of a papyrus that described Afghans as “m onkey-faced hounds,” but it is m o re likely that these coated Tazis, as the natives call them , eVoJved in the deserts and m ountains o f Afghanistan. The tribesm en used the speedy hounds to hunt gazelle and snow leopards. The western world didn’t notice Afghan Hounds in Afghanistan until the 19th century. W ith the Nefertiti garb instead o f clown suits, there would be no group picture. The pharaoh hat was designed for a person’s head. It looked like a sloppy Burger King coronation on the dogs. Also, there was only one jeweled bib (m a d e o f cheap, rubbery stuff) and one Cleopatra’s asp sequined headband, so the duo would have to take turns posing. I was striving for the classic giize into Ghiza shot, but we ran into som e obstacles. Alas, the perfect profile eluded us. The c o a t pattern on show and pet Afghans differs. O n ce spayed o r neu tered, the dogs horm o n e levels are altered, so m o st Afghans grow m o re hair. Some pet Afghans re-sprout the monkey whiskers they used to have as puppies, m aking adults resemble Civil W ar generals. M any al tered Afghans lose any sem b lance o f a natural saddle Which is the pattern of short hair stretching from the neck to the tail and down the s h o s k f e rW id e s , A nat at 20 mph on Halloween. Depending on the direc tion, wind can turn Afghans into supermodels or hairy behem oths. This tim e, gusts mussed the pyra m id poses. W e tried shots on the groom ing table and on the ground, but none qualify for an Uncovering Fleopatra Spread in National Geographic. You be the judge o f which Afghan makes a better Nefertiti. Is it Edgar or his darker sister, the Beauty Queen? All the while, little Charlotte ran around them in her D racula costum é: She had no idea that her vampire outfit was m iscast and passé - so 2008. • Some great Babylon Shelter news: “Star” the longest resident a t Babylon Shelter has found her spe cial family.
