2 • BEACON NEWSPAPER, September 30,2010 Babylon Football: Panthers maul Devils, 43-6 •I recently attended the Babylon Rotary Clubs annual Wine & Food Festival. It was a great day (the last full day of summer, in fact) at the LI Yacht Club. A large white tent set up just behind the main clubhouse was filled with tables bursting with food from lec cai restaurants as well as wine from LI vineyards and shot-size cups of various types of rum, vodka, etc. The first thing to cap ture my inter est were the small chocolate lava cakes be ing offered by Barrique, our new restaurant on Deer Park Avenue that is owned by the Argyle Grill. Everything looked fabulous, as was the salad from the Post Office, the bruschettà from the Carriage House, and the pulled pork and special ribs from the Armadillo Grill. 1 arrived late, so I missed some of the offer ings, but was happy to find a seat with a congenial group to exchange raves about the food and drinks. Ironically, the one item that I liked th e best was Chrissy Auer’s oatmeal- ràisin cookies! I guess I have a long way. to go to become a gourmet. . . give me a good cookie any time! Congratulations to Rotary Presi dent Georgia Westcott and her com mittee. The money raised by this enjoyable event goes to a good cause and all present had a great time! There have been several weddings recently, but I’m hoping to do a spe cial wedding column in an upcom ing issue. •On March 22nd, Joan A. Pirun- dini, a retired staff member of the Babylon Library, died of injuries re ceived in a car-school bus accident at- Main and Carll Avenue earlier that month. Her family and friends were devastated by their loss. Joan was a beloved sister and aunt, and cherished by her friends as well. On Sat., Sept. 11th, former co-workers and friends at the Babylon Library held a reception for Joan’s family and presented them with a lovely framed picture that had been purchased and donated by the Library in her name. Nothing can bring Joan back, b u t the picture ensures that she will always be remembered. •There were several people who celebrated their birthdays: last month: Lorraine Cirasole (9/5), Betty Meyer (9/20), Charlene Gibbs and Judy Skillen (9/26), Joanne Al- lar (9/28), and last, but never least, Sue Valenza (9/29). We hope you all enjoyed your special day! Readers can write to Mary Gal t lagher d o Beacon newspaper, 65 Deer Park Ave., Babylon N Y 11702, or via email at acjnews@rcn.com. Please p u t Mary Gallagher in the subject line. by Tony Spota The Babylon Panthers rebounded to take the Center Moriches Red Devils last Friday night in the fog at Center Moriches. The Cats scored early and often, chalking up 29 points in the first quarter. The final was 43-6. Nine Babylon backs rushed for 304 yards and five touchdowns. Tailback Trevor Fudim had five carries for 99 yards and a TD and quarterback Sam Zamet was 4 of 4 in the air for 113 yards - all in the first period. Count ing return and reception yardage, Fu dim had 148 all-purpose yards. Fu dim scored on the game’s third play from scrimmage. He burst through a gap between Harrison Dittmeier and Ryan Visgauss, deked right and raced left diagonally across the field to pay dirt. The play went for 66 yards. It was his eighth TD of the season. Zamet ran it in for the 2-point conversion. Following Chris DiCristo’s punt to the Babylon 6-yard line, Zamet led the Panthers 94 yards on six plays, gunning 31 yards to Steve Loudon on a left hitch and 34 to Fudim on a left fly. Fullback Jeann Cruz capped the drive banging in behind Dittmeier from the 2. Andrew Hurst kicked the first o f his four extra points. The Devils’ next attempt was thwarted with an interception by Connor Hunter at the Babylon 46 and taken back to the Center 49. Zamet fired twice to Hurst on a right flag for 14 and a fly to the same side for 34. Grant Shannon banged it in behind Visgauss from the 1. The Panthers’ next possession took only one play as Frank Mankiewicz escaped around right end and took it to the house. The play went for 64 yards. The second quarter opened with a sack by Kieran Donnelly his first of two in the game. Clearly a key to the Black D, Donnelly has had a very strong year at linebacker, filling the middle gaps and ranging across the field for yardage-saving tackles. A big charge from Visgauss rushed the ensuing punt which went out of bounds placing Babylon in good field position at the Center 26. Seven plays later, Zamet sneaked it in from the 1. Hunter’s second pick in the end zone stopped the Devils’ last drive of the half. Babylon led 36 zip. Quarterback Zach Fredericks led the Smurfs from the Babylon 30 all the way down to the Red Devil 1. The Red defense stopped the Panthers there. But a loose ball on their first play was pounced upon by A. J. Sulli van for a TD. Danny McHugh kicked the extra point. A word on the Smurfs: These are the grunts who sweat it out every day in the practices against the Big Cats. They carry out their very important roles and wait on the sidelines. Given a shot, they go in hungry and hold up well against the other team’s top players proudly sporting the Babylon banner. Center Moriches tallied on the last play of the contest. They drove 55 yards on eleven plays. With the ball at the Babylon 6, Jeff Foster rolled right and hit Mario Mayen in the end zone for the score. Coach Rick Punzone said, “We’re very pleased with this one. The kids came out of the box right away. Ev eryone got into the game. It was good to bounce back after last week. Our next challenge will be tough against Mount Sinai.” O ther stuff For Babylon, Mankiewicz rushed 81 yards on three carries. Cruz, Shannon and Fredericks combined for 20 more carries and 117 yards. Back from in jury, defensive end Connor Valvo had a good game containing his side. Of his six kickoffs, Andrew Squeglia had one into the end zone and two oth ers to the 1-yard line. Up from the JV, Steven Cibants, Brian Loskamp and Christian Malave made their varsity debuts. Andrew Slawson is now an assistant coach at Center Moriches. He was a star lineman for Babylon on both sides of the ball last year. Ear lier in the week, the Panther JV beat Glenn 33-13. For Center Moriches, DiCristo completed 7 passes for 55 yards. Myles Bell rushed for 54 yards, caught passes for 13 and had another 22 in kick returns for a total 89 all purpose. Next up The Panthers host the Mount Sinai Mustangs at Williams Field tomor row, October 1, Friday night at 7 pm. The Panthers and Mustangs are long time rivals and have excellent teams.
