Stern introduces legislation to respect our fallen heroes Legislation introduced by Legislator Steve Stern (D-16th LD, Huntington), Chairman of the Veterans and Seniors Committee, to protect funerals in Suf folk County from protestors who seek to inflame and disrupt services, passed the Suffolk County Legislature unani mously at the June 8th General Session. This legislation was made necessary because of pro tests nationwide by members of a fringe group, the Westboro Baptist Church, who have dis rupted both military and civilian funer als at churches and cemeteries with disrespect ful and abu sive signs and verbal assaults upon families grieving the loss of their loved ones. “I am profoundly disturbed that legislation is required to ensure respect, dignity and compas sion for our military families who have made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our nation and our way of life and for other families targeted by this hate group for incomprehensible reasons,” Legislator Stern said. “This outrageous cruelty has no place in Suffolk County and I am proud to stand with our mili tary, our veterans and their families on this initiative to respect our fallen he roes and ensure dignity for all families in Suffolk County” Thomas Ronayne, director of the Suf folk County Veterans Services Agency, added “It is tragic that legislation like this is needed at all but since there are people who choose to disrespect the memory and service of our fallen, I thank and congratulate Legislator Stern for introducing this bill. Aside from the obvious impact of this law, it will provide great comfort to the family members of our fallen as well as Suffolk County veterans and residents.” “This new law provides important protections for grieving families, and ensures that our national cemeteries remain plac es of respect and honor,” said Michael Picemo, Direc tor, Calverton National Cem etery. “On be half of the over 200,000 fami lies who have a loved one in terred here, I thank Legisla tor Stern for his work to safe guard this cem etery and others throughout Suf folk County.” Robert Santo, Commander of the American Legion- Greenlawn Post 1244 said “I am grate ful that our Suffolk County Legislature has unanimously taken a stand against those who would cruelly infringe upon the rights of our grieving military fami lies in mourning. It is unfortunate that legislation was required to give these families the respect, dignity and hon or they deserve. We can be proud that Suffolk County has taken this initiative. Thank you, Legislator Steve Stern for introducing this legislation.” “I thank my colleagues on the Legisla ture for joining me in one united voice to say to the families of our fallen and to all who grieve in Suffolk County that we will do all in our power to protect you and ensure that your loved ones can rest in peace,” said Legislator Stern.
