Firefigthters work for 9 hours to bring fire under control; Babylon FD provides mutual aid by Carolyn James A blazing fire demolished buildings at the n orth east corner of Merrick Road and Route 110 in Ami tyville in the early morning hours of Thurs., Sept. 2. Officials said they suspect that the fire was inten tionally set and are investigating. Amityville Fire Department, assisted by Babylon, Copiague, Lindenhurst, North Lindenhurst, West Babylon, Massapequa, Seaford, Wantagh and the Babylon Town Fire Coordinators battled the fire be ginning shortly after 3 a.m. when the first call went out. “When I arrived I could see the smoke seeping from the bricks beneath the windows of the build ing on the corner, said Amityville’s 1st Ass’t Chief Charles Scudlo. “So, I knew that the fire was in the basement and trying to get oxygen.” Scudlo immediately directed volunteers with a hose to the basement, where a large amount of items were stored for the Ski Shop on Broadway and the A’Lure Salon and Day Spa on Merrick Road. Faced with a huge amount of fire, however, the firefighters had to retreat and take up a defensive attack. “The floor on the first floor was becoming spongy, which told us that it might collapse and that we needed to get the volunteers out,” said Scudlo, who added that the fire was coming up through the walls. Efforts were simultaneously un derway to protect the buildings to the north and east of the site by volunteers who put up a wall of water. As a result, the aforesaid buildings sustained no major damage throughout the ordeal. But firefighters had to re- P h o t o by J o e T u r n e r move a corner portion of the building to get to the fire, which seeped into the multiple roofs. By the early morning, additional water sources were needed and the Lindenhurst Fire Department set up a hose from the Amityville River to the fire sité. It took firefighters hours to .bring the tenacious blaze under control and it wasn’t until 12:30 p.m., that the scene was secured. Despite suffering from exhaus tion, no firefighters sustained any injuries, but Amityville officer, Sgt. Sullivan, who was directing traffic at the scene, was struck by a car (Continued on page 3) GOP gubernatorial primary Tuesday date to announce that he was running for governor. by Carolyn James The outcome of the Republican gubernatorial pri mary Tues., Sept. 14 is by most accounts going to be a test of just how angry voters really are. In that race, Republican nominee and Long Islander Rick Lazio faces a challenge from Carl Paladino, an Upstate New Yorker who has brought a heap of money and a razor sharp tongue to the debate. Lazio is calling for politi cal reform—Paladino for political revolution. “Paladino is a political extremist and frankly is too far to the right,” said one Republican working on Lazio’s campaign. “Paladino is to the right of Atilla the Hun,” said Stanley Klein a Professor of Political Science at C.W. Post and a Republican committeeman. Lazio is a former Long Island lawmaker, Congress man and JP Morgan Chase executive, the first candi- While he was the first out of the gate, he’s been behind his Republican opponent in this primary race, and his Democratic rival in November, Andrew Cuomo, when it comes to raising money. He’s hoping that on this last stretch, he can overcome that by getting out a message that resonates with the people. ‘I just don’t see Paladino having a significant im pact,” said another Republican supporter. “There just doesn’t seem to be core Conservatives to support to him.” What he’s hoping to tap into, however, are the Con servatives aligned with the Tea Party, a mostly Con servative bi-partisan group of voters who focus on taxes, government efficiency and political integrity. “The Tea Party is a loud but distinctive minority?
