2 • BEACON NEWSPAPER, September 2,2010 Pastor Lathrop join s c o n g r e g a tion at A scen sion L u theran C h u rch as Senior Pastor Russ Bliss, Church Council president at Ascension Lutheran Church, 33 Bay Shore Rd., Deer Park announced to the congre gation that Pastor Justin Lathrop had been called to the position of Senior Pastor o f Ascension. Pastor Lathrop was Vicar at Ascension in 2000 to 2001 and the congre gation welcomes him back after his tenure at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Woodbridge, Virginia. During his time away from Ascension, Pastor Lathrop and his congregation de veloped contemporary worship, internet and multimedia ministries and in-depth family programming. His emphasis has been on working closely with the mem bership, helping them to deepen their frith. Pastor Lathrop is a graduate o f Roanoke College and the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia. At the seminar he studied Israeli-Palestinian relations in the Holy Land. He also was a student in tern at Maly Kostol (“The Little Church”) in Bratislava, Slovakia and taught early church history at the Lutheran High School there. After his ordination, he was called to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Gaithersburg, Maryland and served that congregation for four and a half years before being called to Woodbridge. The Lathrop family will make their home in Deer Park. Pastor Lathrop will be installed as Pas tor o f Ascension on Sun., Sept. 19,4 p.m. and the community will be invited to join in the celebration. Mrs. Warren will repose at Chapey Funeral Home, 1225 Montauk Highway, in West Jslip, on Thursday, Sept. 2, from 2 to 4:30 p.m., and 7 to 9:30 p.m. A funeral mass will be said at St. Joseph’s R.C. Church, Babylon,, Friday, Sept. 3 at 9:45 a.m. The Rev. Justin Lathrop is shown with his wife and daughter. - Lindenhurst Fire Department gets a new ambulance with grant from Assemblyman Sweeney Thanks to a grant from New York State Assemblyman Robert K. Sweeney, the Lindenhurst Fire Department recently purchased a new ambulance which will serve the residents of the Village o f Lin denhurst. The new ambulance will pri marily be used to respond to all medical emergency alarms, automobile accidents, fire alarms and C 0 2 activations. Because o f the steady increase o f such alarms, now approaching more than 80 percent o f the total number o f ire department responses, reliable ambulances are essential to serve the 28,000 residents o f Lindenhurst. The Rescue Company responded to nearly 2,800 emergency calls in 2009. Babylon Beautification Society needs books for Fair The Babylon Beautification Society is looking for books for the annual Country Fair. The Babylon Beautification Society Country Fair is one o f the oldest and larg est fairs on Long Island. Back in 1973, when Isabel Gallagher and other Babylon Beautification Society members decided to hold a Country Fair to raise m oney to beautify Babylon Village, they had no idea it would become so large. This year’s fair will feature entertain ment by The Third Edition, JC Revue, the Banjo Rascals and Joel Sikowitz and his SwingBand. Surrounding the Gazebo w ill be the food area with a wide array o f food including roasted buttered com , hamburgers, hot dogs, sausage and peppers, nachos, deli sandwiches, pickles, pretzels, bratwurst, fresh fruit and beverages o f all kinds.
