The team looks forward to a successful year. In his eighth year at the helm , Head Coach Rick Punzone expressed enthusiasm , “We have a good group o f students with the. speed and talent to com pete, he said.\ Babylon is seeded second in D ivision IV. Bayport has been grant ed the top seed. Glenn, M ount Sinai, Hampton Bays and Center M oriches round out the top six. The D ivision w ill reduce from fourteen to twelve teams. Am ityville and Shoreham have m oved to D ivision III. This year s returning assistant coaches are defensive coordinator Chris Morra, Steve Fasciani, Tom M cNulty and Bill Singleton. V innie DiLapi m oves up from the JV. Mike D ejoseph has m oved up to Athletic Director. Tim Halvorsen w ill continue as JV coach, joined by J. P. Parinello. Dan M cHugh and Jay Egan w ill direct the Junior High team. Twenty-four players have graduated from last year’s club and seventeen are returning. Am ong the Big Cats, N ick Brennan, Casey Holgan, Brendan Cun ningham , Zach Bassen, Jose Jimenez and John Sutherland return to the in terior line positions. M ost have expe rience on both sides o f the ball and all have been tested in post season play. Linemen m oving up from the J V and Ju nior High clubs are Harrison Dittm eier, Ryan Visgauss and John Dertinger. At tight end, Christian Am elia returns with Greg Dieterich m oving up. W ideouts Steve Loudon, Andrew Hurst and Matt Rodriguez return, with M ichael Jackson m oving up. Veteran quarterback Sam Zamet w ill be joined by Zach Fredericks. The team has a fine group o f backs returning. M ost are ex perienced on both sides o f the ball as running backs, linebackers and defen sive backs - Trevor Fudim, Sean Logan, Rod Holder, Connor Hunter, Connor Valvo and Kieran Donnelly. Frank M ankiewicz, Dan M cHugh, Nahari Jenkins, Elijah Clark and Gene Cruz w ill m ove up. The kicking game w ill be handled by Hurst and soccer standout Andrew Squeglia. The team captains w ill be Brennan, Hurst and Loudon. The 2009 Panthers fell short o f the County final for the first tim e in four teen years. They defeated the ultim ate County champ, Am ityville, during the regular season, but fell to Bayport in the first round o f the playoffs. Babylon ended the season at 7-2 and outscored their opponents 303-93. The offense gained 3131 yards, good for 135 first downs. The defense held all opponents to 74 first downs and 1633 yards. The current regular season schedule for 2010 w ill have five night games: 9/11 (Saturday) at Greenport 2 pm, 9/16 (Thursday) vs. Glenn 7 pm , 9/24 (Friday) at Center M oriches 7 pm , 10/1 (Friday) vs. M ount Sinai 7 pm , 10/9 (Saturday) H om ecom ing vs. Wyan- danch 2 pm , 10/15 (Friday) at Bayport 7 pm , 10/23 (Saturday) at Port Jefferson 2 pm and, 10/29 (Friday) vs. Hampton Bays 7 pm. Police identify Lindenhurst woman stabbed to death; husband charged Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad detectives have identified a wom an who was found dead in the back seat of her ex-husbands vehicle at the Sore Thumb Beach in Babylon on Sunday. She has been identified as Gulcin Karadag, 49, o f 675 North Erie Ave., Lindenhurst, and her husband, Muhammet Karadag, 50, has been charged with stabbing her to death. Police identified her on M onday fol lowing an investigation that began when Lindenhurst firefighters rushed to the victim s home at approximately 4 a.m. after receiving a call about a fire and ex plosion there. As firefighters searched the hom e for victim s and worked to put ou the blaze, they discovered what appearec to be the scene of a violent struggle in : rear bedroom of the home. They imme diately called police. \It was obvious from the amount o heat the fire generated and the fact tha there was so much fire that something wa: amiss,\ said James Gallagher, 1st Ass'tChie o f the Lindenhurst Fire Department. \Then once we saw the bedroom w< called police and closed off the room unti they arrived.\ C h ief Steve Smaldon was in charg< at the scene and approxim a tely 6C firefighters responded. O ne sustainec minor injuries. The street was cordomed off m ost of the day on Sunday as police continued to investigate the incident. They broadcast a notification to be on the lookout for the husbands vehicle, a 2001 Chevrolet Ta hoe, and it was located at the Sore Thumb Beach by a Marine Bureau officer. Kara dag was unconscious lying between the front and back seat and was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital for treatment of what appeared to be a drug overdose. The couple had lived in the hom e for several years and neighbors said they had maintained their hom e well and had a pool in the back yard where they often entertained friends. Sources said that over the past year, however, the property be came overgrown and the pool remained closed this summer. Arson Squad detectives are investigat ing the cause of fire. Detectives are ask ing anyone who may have information about this incident to call the Homicide Squad at 631-852-6392 or anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
