4 » BEACON NEWSPAPER, August 2 6 ,2010 E d i t o r i a l : DRAWING CONCLUSIONS —by Kevin Eastwood Let’s help our kids have a successful school y ear We are about ready to bid farewell to what has been a beautiful summer—hot hazy and full of sunshine as summer should be. Next up: sending the kids off to school. It’s not an easy transition for our children who have been carefree for two solid months, but it is an impor tant one. Let’s help get them off on the right track. Set down rules and regulations for doing home work, reading and paying close attention to their studies. Now is the time to clear out some space in their bedrooms or in the family room where they can do their work without distractions. Have a serious discussion about limiting their time on their cell phones, playing games on the computer or some other electronic device and sitting in front o f the television. Forewarned is forearmed, and it makes cracking down on these activities, when necessary, a little easier. Incorporate time into their schedules for some ex ercise. Whether it is joining a club or athletic group at school or simply taking a family walk before or after dinner, it’s time to get into healthy habits again. And, don’t forget to reinforce those healthy eating habits. Most of all, set up some rewards for hitting all of the goals you discuss with your children. It should be something simple and fun that the family can do to gether. Send them off prepared to be well and do well and have a great school year. R e a d e r s ’ V o i c e s : Letters an d Commentary Anti-mosque sentiment is modem twist to an old form of discrimination Dear Editor: I must take exception to the letter published re cently concerning the proposed building o f a mosque near the 9/11 memorial site. The writer states that zoning laws should be used to bar this religious build ings from areas where there may seem to be conflict ing feelings regarding the said religion. The proposed building was approved by two different zoning boards that exist in the City o f New York. A Historical Zon ing panel found that the current building was not of enough historical value for its facade to be saved and a second zoning board found that there was no reason for a house of worship not to be placed in the area. Does the writer wish to suspend the First Amendment to allow the government the right to ban churches? This may seem on face value to be about only one religion, but it is not. Most people who enjoy Ameri can history know that John Adams was first made fa mous for acting as the defense attorney for the British soldiers involved in what is commonly known as the Boston Massacre. Though he defended the unpopu lar side, Adams got most of the enlisted personnel acquitted. Adams was applauded by the colonial press for proving that, unlike their European coun terparts, that these colonies had a foundation of laws and that the rule of law was there for everyone, even those who were seen to be enemies o f the colonies! What is less known is that later in life, John Ad ams defended what would now be called the Ameri can Baptist Church in court against a popular move ment to formally ban the Baptist Church in the newly formed United States o f America and won. The popu lar wisdom did no want the Baptist to be able to build churches, organize services, etc. Again, by use of Law, John Adams, though defending a hated defen dant, used the law to enable this group to enjoy the same rights as all Americans. Finally, how quickly we forget. I remember be ing told that my friends’ fathers and grandfathers had to change the family name from Mcjones to Jones so they would not be thought of as Catho lic, or from Robertowitz to Roberts so they would not be viewed as Jewish. This was done to gain em ployment in New York City. Do Americans need to keep repeating our racial/religious mistakes about the newest immigrants or other group that is now climbing the American political/economic ladder? Finally, to paraphrase Abraham Lincoln; It is not a question o f ‘is God on our side’, rather it is a question of are we on God’s side?
