I A n thony is a student at Parliam ent Place El em entary School and likes to play with cars and trucks, and Poke- m an. He also enjoys baseball and hanging out w ith his friends. He wants to be a firefigthter when he grows up. “He’s a little shy, b u t in dire tim es he’s calm, cool, a n d collected,” said his m o ther Dawn Serpenti, who a ttended the m eeting with friends and family. “911 is a simple num b er, but it saves lives,” Dawn Serpenti a n d h e r h u sband Alan were away on a business trip together w h en the incident oc curred. “He told the dispatcher everything, and then called a neighbor,” she said. That brought police and rescue volunteers to his h o m e a n d iinm e d ia te m edical assistance to his grandfather, James O ’Shaughnessy. O’Shaughnessy was rushed to G o o d Samaritan H o spital where he was diagnosed with two brain tum o rs, both of which were not detected up until that point, causing his collapse. “I d idn’t know what was going on,” said a grate ful O’Shaughnessy. “Then when I found out what my grandson did, I was so proud o f him.” “Seeing anyone in that condition, is a traum a tic thing, but can you im agine what it was like for A n thony to see his grandfather in that condition,” said Suffolk C o u n ty Executive Steve Bellone. “Yet, he had the courage and m aturity to dial 9-1-1- and call for help.” Asked by a reporter to talk about how he felt about his actions and the award, his answer was simple: “forget about it,” h e said. A n thony’s actions can be attributed to the hard w o rk and hand-m e -dow n lessons of his father, a N o rth Babylon volunteer firefighter . A n thony and his sister Victoria were taught at a y o u n g age how to handle em ergencies of all kind. It’s another thing to have to stand u p at a p ublic m e e t ing a n d accept accolades for it. For 9-year-old A n thony Serpenti of N o rth Bab ylon, saving his grandfather’s life on June 8 by calling 911 when he found him unconscious in the backyard, wasn’t tough. Accepting the Baby lon Town’s Heroism Award was. On July 14, A n thony received the Babylon Town Board’s h ighest civilian award for h eroism. Standing in front of a crowd of friends, fam ily, tow n officials and tow n residents, Serpenti looked nothing like the boy who took charge of the situation w h en he h is g randfather collapsed.
