POLICE BLOTTER The Suffolk County Police D epartm ent’s First Pre cinct and other local fire and law enforcem ent agencies reported the follow ing incidents: CRIMINAL M ISCHIEF West Islip: Someone made graffiti on a Montauk Highway building sometime between the evening of May 28 and the night of June 2. The incident was re ported just this week. East Farmingdale: Sometime between July 3 and July 7 someone vandalized several cars at a lot on Central Avenue. Deer Park: On July 3 at 8 p.m., four teens in white shirts were seen breaking windows on West 10th Street. Police responded, but the youths fled. Babylon Village: Police reported that a man ap proximately 60 years old was involved in a pos sible road rage incident on West Main Street the evening of July 2. Police did not said whether the man was the victim of the incident, or the assailant PETIT LARCENY Copiague: On July 5 a shoplifter fled a Sunrise Highway store in a black Chevy after having sto len assorted merchandise. Police are investigating BURGLARY Wheatley Heights: Sometime between 10:30 p.m., July 1 and 11 a.m., July 2 someone stole an undis closed amount of copper from a North 18th Street home. •On July 2, sometime between 1 and 8 a.m., some one broke into a Waterford Drive home while the family was asleep and stole assorted items. Wyandanch: A flat screen TV and other items were taken June 30 from a Patton Avenue home. Police were called at 10 p.m. Lindenhurst: Entering through a hole in a ceding, someone broke into a Wellwood Avenue business sometime between July 3 and July 6, stealing undis closed items. •Police were called at 12:45 p.m. on July 6, report ing a break-in at a South 16th Street home. Copiague: Upon arriving home July 7 at 7:45 p.m., the occupants o f a Waldo Street home discovered that in their absence someone had broken in and had tak en a variety o f valuables. North Lindenhurst: A public works building on N. Indiana Avenue was broken into sometime be fore 9 a.m., June 30. Several articles were taken. GRAND LARCENY East Farmingdale: A diamond watch and an un disclosed amount of cash were taken July 7 from a locker at a Rte. 110 gym. The theft was reported at 12:30 p.m. North Babylon: On July 4 at noon, police received a call that someone had broken into a car on Jacqueline Way and had taken a number o f valuable items. Deer Park: A GPS, an I-Pod and a wallet were taken June 30 from a car on West 20th Street. Police were notified at 7 a.m. ARRESTS DWI: The following persons have been arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated or impaired: Nicholas Trovato, 1 Susan Ct., Deer Park; Erik Miranda, 813 Carlton Rd., West Babylon; Yolanda Belle, 9 Florida Ave., Copiague; Jose Arguetalazo, 40 West Orchid St., Hempstead; Steven Arias, 174 South 15th St., Lindenhurst; Christopher Bacayon, 81 Albermarle Ave., West Babylon; Kenneth Buddenhagen, 697 Centre Ave., Lindenhurst; Gualberto Llerandez, 2310 121st St., College Point; Jose Morales, 42 South 24th St., Wyandanch; Criminal Sex Act: Ray Johnson, 53 Jamaica Ave., Wyandanch (also charged w/Forcible Touching); Robbery: Laquan Humphrey, 41 Benburb S t, Amityville; Burglary: R ichard G reene, 64 C h a m p lin St., Ronkonkoma (five counts). The charges against those arrested are allegations and the cases are still pending in the courts. Individuals charged and whose names appear in this column may submit documentation to us at a later date that the charges have been dismissed or that they have been found innocent and we will include that information in this space in a timely manner. July 2 9 ,2010, BEACON NEWSPAPER • 3 West Islip School Board members sworn in; new superintendent announces open office hours by Tiffany Elliott The West Islip School Board swore in members, both new and old at its re- organizational meet ing two weeks ago, and also gave a for mal welcome to the district's new super intendent. Rich Si mon of Cold Spring Harbor is scheduled to assume the post o f Superintendent Beth Blau who retires this week. The board wel comed newly elected trustee Scott Brady while trustees Steve Geller and Annmarie LaRosa were unani mously reelected as president and vice president, respect fully. Simon has been working in the dis trict as acting super intendent. He's been meeting with stu dents, staff and resi dents and announced that he is looking for input and ideas from the community. He is holding open offic es hours Mon., Aug. 2 from 3 to 5 p.m.; Tues., Aug. 3 from 10 a.m. to noon and Wed., Aug. 4 from 7 to 9 p.m. \I am honored to have been selected as your new superintendent and to be joining a great school sys tem and community,\ he told residents in a letter. '' Over the next few weeks I intend to listen and learn a lot about West Islip. With your help, I hope to develop a comprehensive picture o f where West Islip has been, is, and, most importantly, hopes to go...By reaching W.B. Youth injured in accident; police seek public's help A 17-year-old West Babylon youth was seriously injured in a motor vehicle accident Sun., July 11, at Little East Neck Road and Roland Drive, West Baby lon. Suffolk County Police First Squad detectives are investigating the incident and are asking the public for their assistance. They gave this account: Paul Baumann Jr., 17, was driving an unregistered mini-motorcycle north on Little East Neck Road in West Babylon when he was struck by a 2000 Nissan Xterra heading in the opposite direction that was making a left turn onto Roland Drive. The accident occurred at 11:50 p.m. Baumann, of 19 Bruce St., was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip and admitted in serious condition. The driver o f the Xterra, Katherine Daly, 47, of 140 Coats Ave., Holbrook, was not injured. Both vehicles were impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash and has not already been interviewed by police to call the First Squad at 631-854-8152 or anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. The retired New York City Police Sergeant, just beginning his three-year term acknowledges the learning curve. \As a new board member I know there will be some things I will have to learn,\ he said. \Hopefully there will be things I can get involved with right away.\ Rounding out the seven-member school board are members Sharon Bieselin, George Smith, Robert Ul rich and Michael Zotto who got down to business ap pointing members to different board committees and making up the 2010/2011 schedules. At that same meeting, the new superintendent was in attendance. \I think the board of education made a good deci sion to build in some overlap,\ said Simon who came from the Cold Spring Harbor School District. \Dr. Blau has been here for for many years and I can learn many things from her.\ Upcoming meetings will be held at 8 p.m. on Tues., Aug. 12 and Tues., Sept. 16 at the West Islip High School.
