8 • BEACON N E W S P APER, July 29,2010 Lindenhurst honors outstanding athletes West Islip Boy's Varsity Lacrosse Team inducted into the Suffolk Sports Hall o f Fame Lindenhurst High- School celebrated their varsity athletes at an awards banquet on June 1 at the Mdville Marriott. Coordinated by the Varsity Club and the Lindenhurst School District athletic department, the eve ning serves to recog nize the dedication of Lindenhurst athletes and the many programs they partici pate in. The banquet began with the grand procession of the most valuable play ers for each team. Outstanding athletes were chosen for the Lindenhurst Hall o f Fame. Individual awards were present ed to athletes and coaches throughout the evening. Football coach Nick Lom bardo and tennis coach Debi Bonan- duci received the prestigious Bulldog Award for their continuous support Babylon senior prepares for the next play After throwing strikes I S’- \ \ a as a Panther, Babylon High School girls varsity softball senior Amanda McKay will continue her athletic journey in the fall at East Strouds burg University in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylva nia. In late May, and just days before her team (which was seeded first) competed in playoffs, McKay signed a Nation al Letter o f Intent to play softball at the institution of higher education. McKay has played on Babylon’s var sity softball team since the eighth grade and on the Long Island Chargers travel team since ninth grade. Additionally, she has been named to the honor roll all four years of high school. Amanda aspires to major in special education while attending East Stroudsburg. West Islip Boys’ Varsity La crosse Team has been inducted into the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame. The team and its coaches earned the recognition over the last few de cades. The team has been New York State and national winners. Ac cepting the honor was Head Coach Scott Craig. Also there was Assistant Coach Bill Turri, who was joined by several additional West Islip coach es, West Islip youth coordinators and West Islip families. More than 600 people attended the induction. The Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame was founded in 1990 as a not-for-profit or of Lindenhurst Athletics. “The evening celebrated the a c c o m p l i s h ments of the student-athletes and coaches throughout the school year,” an nounced Direc tor of Athletics Richard Roche. “In addition, we cel ebrated the academic achievements of our teams. This public museum and educa tional facility is located on South Ocean Avenue in Patchogue and contains memorabilia, educational materials, a sports library and mini theatre and also contains interactive displays that com municate the positive achievements of the county’s athletic role models. West Islip native named Liberty League Rookie o f the Year The Liberty League has announced its year-end awards in men’s and wom en’s outdoor track and field and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student David Kastner was the men’s Rookie o f . the Year, respectively A freshman out o f West Islip, Kastner carried his solid start from indoor into the outdoor portion of the season, helping RPI to its second straight outdoor title at the Liberty League Meet. He finished fifth or higher in the two events he com peted in at the conference meet and then placed sixth in his first Decathlon at the State Meet. Kastner, who also posted fifth and ninth place finishes in two other events at States, was the 2010 Liberty League Indoor Rookie of the Year and is a former standout at West Islip High School.
