Helping Hands successfully collects fo r Suffolk County Children The Helping Hands success fully collected approximately 2,000 kids meals, school sup plies, backpacks, shorts “ and gifts for Suffolk County chil dren at its annual Back Pack Drive. This was a noteworthy occasion because the night be fore, June 15, Jennifer Gallozzi and her family were honored at Villa Lombardis on the Bay, Patchogue, by Suffolk County’s Long Island Headstart for the family’s 20 years o f service to Head start children in 13 locations. Gallozzi started the Helping Hands for her three daughters Jaime, Jodie and Jan- nah in 1990. They always inspired their classmates in Wèst Islip schools to par ticipate in the year-round drives. Her husband Bob (Santa to the children) also helps out year round. Jenni fer Gallozzi received a plaque, flowers and ap plause from the crowd for her commitment to Headstart’s children The next morning June 16, it was back to work for Gallozzi when Patchogue Headstart picked up donations for its pre-K moving up ceremony. Local Resident graduates from basic training Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Barbara Rodriguez graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. She is the daughter o f M ary Rodriguez of Manorvill and granddaughter o f Bar bara Gallagher o f Lindenhurst. Rodri guez is a 2 0 05 graduate o f St. Anthony’s High School, South Huntington. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in m ilitary discipline and stud ies, Air Force core values, physical fit ness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College o f the Air Force. Legislator Horsley honors local musician Bill McShane, a senior at West Babylon High School, was invited to the district office of Suffolk County Legislator Way ne Horsley in Lindenhurst to demonstrate his musical talents on the b aritone saxophone. McShane has earned top ho nors in musical competitions both individually and as a m em ber o f numerous select bands including the All-County Jazz Ensemble, All County Band as well as the Nassau Suffolk Per forming Arts Jazz Ensemble. He is the only baritone saxophone chair in the Jazz Band o f America for 2010. The Jazz Band of America has the repu tation o f the highest level o f excellence. In addition to earning musical honors, McShane also earned the principal’s Award for Music and Lea dership, and numerous medals in the Science Olympiads. He is the vice pre sident o f the Tri-M Music Honor S o cie ty and a m em b er o f the National Honor Society. Legislator Horsley presented M cSha ne with a proclamation honoring his accomplishments. Balmer. 10-697 7/29 Woman's Club awards Amity Students The Amityville Woman’s Club recently awarded high school seniors Yonnique Wilson and Ashley Moreno the Naomi Griffith Scholar ship Award. The award was established many years ago to foster and encourage fur ther education for a gradu ating young woman. This year’s scholarship com mittee consisted of Karen Colfer, Mary Evens, Susan Johnson, Pauline Koller and Chair Dorothy Garvin. Traditionally, the organization gives out a single $1,000 award. The philanthropies committee, chaired by Marilyn Brous, decided again this year to donate part o f the money raised at the philanthropies luncheon to award a second $1,000 scholarship. These schol arships were presented to Morena and Wilson, Thurs., June 3 during the Amityville School District Awards night entitled Might o f the Stars.
