Finally, all those problems o f po tential international mail fraud and pos sibly finding our invitations being sold on E-bay were gone. The real embossed invi tation was in my hand. The President and Chairman o f the Royal Over-Seas League request the pleasure of the company of Ms. Elena de Murías at a reception in the State Apartments o f S t James Palace, Lon don, SW1 in the gracious presence o f Her Majesty The Queen & Their Royal High nesses The Duke o f Edinburgh & Princess Alexandra on Tuesday, 1st o f June 2010 at 5:45p.m. Dress: Lounge Suit/Day Dress / National Dress. And tucked away in the envelope with other information on parking, v Was an other letter, an unexpected surprise. Writ ten in bold letters was: We are pleased to announce that you have been selected to meet a member o f the Royal Family. Luck ily my friend and escort, Mehemosh M. Motashaw (Manny) got the same invita tion. How exciting was that! Tuesday morning was chaotic The dress was mangled in flight; my nails were a mess...but thankfully there was a team o f wonderful friends to put me back together following the instructions carefully pre pared by Constantine o f Elizabeth Arden. By three oclock, we were ready. Manny was in a gray double breasted suit (lounge suit) and I wore beige with pearls. The highly polished black Rolls Royce Camar- gue pulled up and we were off to meet the Queen. The weather was terrible It was every thing I remembered about London weath er. . ..rain, rain and then rain with wind. It was miserable. The car dropped us off at the Royal Overseas Club where many of the invitees gathered in the Lobby for what should have been a quick walk down to St James Palace. Instead all o f us were donning raingear (I had my yellow sailing slicker) and umbrellas for what would be a very wet walk But we were not unhappy. Even in the rain, how many times would any one of us have this opportunity? We met invitees from all over the w orld... Australia, New Zealand, countries in Asia, Africa and a few from the United States. Sharing umbrellas and stories, we all walked in a group to the Palace. The Palace was beautiful. And, the staff was so efficient and nice. No one would ever have known everyone was w et We checked our raingear and immediately were escorted to our assigned room to wait for the Royals. Manny and I were assigned to the Entrée Room, a large room with enormous portraits in elaborate gold frames o f past kings and historical figures in British History including Lord Nelson and George IV The wallpaper was flocked green velveteen and the car pet a beautiful oriental. Our hosts intro duced us to our group o f ten who were “to meet a Royal”, in our case Prince Phillip. Mr. Ralph Bauer, the leader, practiced our names and certain pieces of information so each introduction was individual and personal. Then the doors opened. And in walked Queen Elizabeth and The Duke of Edin burgh, Prince Philip. She was beautiful, wearing a two piece suit of black white and yellow; black patent leather Feraga- mo low heels, black gloves and carrying a black patent leather purse The Duke wore a gray suit. It is protocol for the Queen to enter before her husband so all of us watched while she was introduced to her first set o f 10. When she had moved on to the second group, Prince Philip was ush ered in to his first group of ten. We were the fifth group so we watched as the Queen and Duke moved from one group to the next and marveled at their ease and grace. They shook hands with each person and stood around chatting. And then it was our tum . Prince Philip was introduced to each of us and was curious about where I came from in The United States and how I had become a member o f the Royal Over seas Club. But, it was Manny who really stole the show. The Duke was somewhat interested in his London/New York con nection. But, he came to life when Manny said he was originally from Bombay, India, now called Mumbai. He wanted to know all about his family, what year they had left for England, and why. Manny understood his interest and later reminded me that The Duke’s uncle, Lord Mountbatten had been the last Viceroy o f India. Fascinating! Princess Alexandra moved freely through the room speaking with everyone without a formal introduction. Dressed in a two piece blue/gray and white knitted suit, she was delightful. Once the Queen, Prince Philipand Prin cess Alexandra moved on to the next room, we were free to roam through the Palace. Sipping glasses of champagne and eating delicious passed canapés, we explored the beautiful rooms introducing ourselves to the other fascinating attendees. There was the Tapestry Room; The Council Cham ber, where the Queen meets with the Prime Minister and his Cabinet and oth ers... each more elegant that the last My favorite was the Throne Room where the Queen receives the credentials o f new am bassadors and other foreign dignitaries to The Court o f S t James. The throne where she sits is canopied in maroon brocade with the Shield o f the House of Windsor behind her. After seeing her minutes be fore, it was easy for us to imagine her in her ceremonial robes on the throne wel coming each new dignitary. And then the party ended. Once back out in the rain, it was hard to imagine that we had had such a magical experience... probably not to be repeated!” display a NOYL decal on their storefront BCC Founder Felice Niland officially kicked off the program at Village Hall with an exciting welcome. Babylon Village Mayor, Ralph Scordino gave a poignant send-off to student participants. Baby lon resident Karyn Kirschbaum was also honored by Robin McKinnon on behalf of BCC members for her continuous dedica tion to the Babylon Community. All teams departed on foot, returning 90 minutes later with pledges in hand to enjoy re freshments and review their observation sheets. Students made observations about store signage, and the interest o f the clerk owner o r manager. Participants of the NOYL campaign at tended a three hour training directed by West Babylon resident Kathleen Flynn- Bisson, founder of Stories of Substance, KFBPTA In c or KFB Prevention Through the Arts prior to the kick-off. During the framing, participants were grouped in teams with two adults and two students; three teams were established: Sober Alli ance, M y Brothers K eeper and Team Re sponsibility, all aptly named by team mem bers. The Babylon Community Coalition was founded by Felice Niland, a Babylon resi dent, parent and Social Worker, who be came alarmed by the 2008 Bach Harrison Prevention Needs Assessment survey’s re sults; namely how Babylon teens surveyed perceive a favorable approval o f adults in regards to teen use o f alcohol and substance abuse. The school survey also reported 4.7 percent o f eighth graders, 33.0 percent of tenth graders and 52.4 percent of twelfth graders had engaged in binge drinking in the two weeks prior to taking the survey. Binge drinking-is defined as having five or more drinks within an hour for males and four o r more for females. Many stakeholders h g p joined forces to support the mission o f the Babylon Com munity Coalition. Ms. Flynn-Bisson gen erously donated her time to this project and St Joseph’s Parish in Babylon donated the space; Mayor Scordino faithfully at tends all BCC functions as does a repre sentative from the 1st precinct Lindsay Henry, a Town of Babylon Councilman attended the NOYL kick-off for the first time and thanked the participants for their commitment and dedication to the issue of underage drinking.
