THURSDAY, June 24,2010 . 50 CENTS Norm ans to receive Nathaniel C onklin Award for Volunteerism Ceremony to be held July 2nd at Village concert Rose and Bob Norman, this year's Nathaniel Conklin Award winners in Babylon Village. Ceremony scheduled fo r July 2. by Joanna Fantozzi Rose and Bob Norman are to be named winners of the Nathaniel Conklin Award at the Recognition ceremony set for July 2. Rose and Bob Norman, the husband and wife team that owns Babylon Hardware on Deer Park Avenue, have been named the recipients of this year’s Nathaniel Conklin Award for volunteerism. The couple are active with the arts in Babylon and Bob is a former School Board member. This award is given annually to an individual that commemorates the “spirit of volunteerism” and local pride that is prevalent in the 'Babylon community. “We decided to make it a double award this year because they work so hard together,” said Betty Siegel, chairwoman of the award committee. The N a thaniel Conklin Award was established more than a decade ago when several Babylon residents were working on the restoration of the Nathaniel Conklin House, the home of the Village’s founder. The award celebrates Conklin’s memory and encourages the continuation of community service in the village. “I know it’s an honor to be given this award,” said Rose Norman. “But I think I’m still in shock (at having been nominated).” The Normans, who have been married for 35 years, are members of the Babylon Village Arts Council, and have been active in bringing many art and cultural programs to the community of Babylon. They initiated and worked on such projects as the second Thursday concert series held with the cooperation of Astoria Federal Savings Bank; concerts at the library; art workshops for children at the Conklin House and (Continued on page 8) West Islip School District appoints new Superintendent by Lena Pennino The West Islip School board, in a split vote, approved the appointment ofitsnewSuperintendent, Richard A Simon. The vote was taken at the school board’s June 10 meeting. Simon will begin his service as Deputy Superintendent in July, and as Superintendent in August. Simon is the assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction at Cold Spring Harbor Central School District. Before that, he was the principal of The Wheatley School in Old Westbury from 1995 to 2008, and in three other schools - two in New Jersey and one in Connecticut He started his career as a social studies teacher at Brighton High School, Rochester, New York, where he also graduated high school He said he’s excited to be joining the district. “West Islip has a great reputation,” Simon said. “While I checked out a few openings for superintendent, this district caught my eye.” Simon has held leadership positions for almost 30 years, mostly at the building level. “That whetted my appetite to be in the top leadership position for a public school, especially at a time when we are facing a lot of challenges. With those challenges also comes great opportunity? he said. Simon will replace Dr. Beth Virginia Blau next month. She has been with West Islip schools for 15 years, nine as superintendent. Although all board members agreed that Simon is an excellent candidate, two voted against his appointment. “I think an internal candidate would have fit the bill better,” said Trustee Michael Zotto. “This (his no vote) is nothing against Mr. Simon.,He is very qualified; he just would not have been my first choice. Instead, Zotto said \the district could have gone with someone who has been in the district more than 30 years.. .someone who has proven himself.\ And, he said the district would have saved money. Board Member Eliot Bloom’s “nay” was also for financial reasons, he said. If the board approved an in- house candidate, such as Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources Lou Zocchia, the district could have saved money because Zocchia was willing to assume both positions for a year. “It could have saved money (Continued on page 3)
