4 . BEACON NEWSPAPER, April 8,2010 [TORiAL: Make use o f your library tax dollars This week, many residents and readers will be asked to head to their local library to cast their ballots for their library’s 2010-2011 budget, and to elect library trustees. Traditionally, these votes and elections get very little at tention and a low voter turnout. Let’s make a change this year. Our local libraries do an amazing job of providing li brary users with the latest books, magazines and period icals. They have audio books and movies. They are a re source of news and information that just can’t be beat. With the advent of technology, libraries moved almost seamlessly to become a one-stop center for online news and information. Library cardholders can access many databases, which are otherwise very costly, through their libraries. And they can do it without even leaving their homes. New and improved services are already here, or are on their way, such as being able to download books and movies right to your own computer from the comfort of your home. These are difficult economic times, undoubtedly, and we recognize that many homeowners are facing hard ships as their taxes continue to go up every year. That is why it is important to make those taxes work for you. Take full advantage of the free services your library has to offer. Instead of renting a movie, borrow one; instead of buying a book, check one out of the library. Use the library databases at no cost Doing this will save you money and recoup most if not all of your library tax dollars each year. And, don’t forget to get out and vote. R e a d e r s ’ V o i c e s : Letters and Commentary Readers respond to editorial on health care Dear Editor: Your editorial against the recently passed healthcare bill reflected all our concerns about how we will pay for it.,Unfairly, it seems, you omitted to mention the good stuff; tens of millions more being covered; tens of thousands no longer being dropped due to “preexisting” conditions. Not knowing better, I thought perhaps the Record’s editor might not be a compassionate fellow. Searching through some fairly recent Amityville records, I did sense compassion when you went livid against the current administration because a friend in Lindenhurst lost his dealership. So it is thumbs up for car dealers, thumbs down for healthcare for all. hmmm! Bill Seiman, Amityville • • • Dear Editor: Your Editorial in the March 24 paper is wonderful and I thank you for speaking out on this critical issue. We must make every effort to repeal and replace this bitter pill that has been shoved down our throats. Health care reform is necessary and the Republican’s have many ways to fix the system without the takeover of our lives, and they would do it with much less cost, but they were shut out and ignored, just like “we the people” are being shut out and ignored. The Republicans are not innocent by any means because they had their chance and did nothing, to the detriment of our society. I believe they will listen to us now. Glenn Beck’s television program is an eye-opener and even if you disagree with him, he is worth watching because he shines the light on the corruption in our government. I’m inspired by him to pay attention to the politicians we vote into office. We cannot blindly trust our elected officials to do the right thing because it allows corruption to seep in. As responsible American citizens we must be vigilant; Glenn Beck has quoted our Founding Fathers, Martin Luther King, and Ronald Reagan many times and the two quotes that stick in my mind are: “question with boldness,” and “speak without fear.” The Amityville Record has given a forum to the people in this community that is a wonderful way to exercise our First Amendment rights and to find out what’s in the minds and hearts of our community. Where we have the right to counter or agree or bring up a new issue in a public newspaper is a wonderful thing for the freedom of speech. The federal government might try to shut down a radio or television program, but they can never shut up “we the people” as long as there is a nonpartisan, freedom loving newspaper like the Amityville Record. Lei Lani Yeswoit, Amityville The Beacon Newspaper invites readers to present their views, ideas and issues. Please submit letters to the editor to us at 65 Deer Park Ave., Babylon N Y 11702. Letters should be signed and include a daytime telephone number for verification purposes only. We do not accept personal thank you notes, political endorsements or anonymous letters, but will, under some circumstances withhold the name of a writer upon request. Subscribers can post comments on this letter and other letters, stories and articles and photographs in this newspaper at www.babylonbeacon.com America is hurting and it needs loyal citizens to keep the faith Dear Editor: Let us stop for a moment to catch our breath. We are witnessing actions by our elected leaders in Washington, D.C. who are now in majority rule, that are deplorable, to say the least. They have distanced themselves from our Constitution and resorted to fascist-type politics in order to satisfy their take-over agendum. We loyal Americans are being hurt by this deplorable behavior and many are disillusioned by the deceitful actions and broken promises by the people who were elected in good faith. This is a time to keep our composure and suppress our anger or hatred, if you will. Our great nation has always bounced back from the darkest times and we will once again, if we stick to our basic belief in “God and Country” and our “Constitution.” We are good people and once the bad apples are voted out and the good ones remain, our beautiful “America” will heal its wounds.
