DRAWING CONCLUSIONS —-by Kevin Eastwood FINALLY ONE OF THE JAPANESE AUTO MAKERS TAKES A HIT! SO MUCH FOR THEIR PERFECT SAFETY RECORD. ACTUALLY THE FAULTY PART WAS MANUFACTURED IN INDIANA REALLY?! R e a d e r s ’ V o i c e s : Letters and Commentary Answer found in ACLU membership 4 • BEACON NEWSPAPER, February 4, 2010 .£ tvBpiTORIAL: There’s enough blame to go around in the high tax game Last week, Nassau County lawmakers gave them selves healthy raises, only to rescind them days later after a tremendous public outcry. Were glad they did, but frankly, we are confused as to why they would have supported them in the first place. At all levels o f government, there is finger pointing and commenting about the reason taxes are so high on Long Island. Lawmakers point to the school dis tricts; the school districts point to the State and the State points to local government. It’s about time all o f them clean their own houses; they are all to blame, and they all need to work togeth er to bring us some tax relief. Healthy raises, wheth er they are for lawmakers, administrators, teachers, janitors, highway department employees or any other employee who works in the public sector should sim ply be taken off the drawing board until Long Island property owners have a chance to breathe. Be a hero today; donate blood Every year about this time, the supply o f blood that is vitally needed to save lives runs low. As a result of the busy holiday season, and all o f the accidents and other problems that arise as people rush about, the demand for blood generally exceeds what is available. Now is the time for you to donate. You can do it if you are 18 years-of-age or older and in good health. Or, you can put together a group of blood donors at work, within your community or fra ternal organization. Either way, your efforts will save •lives. Good Samaritan Hospital is holding a blood drive lues., Feb. 23. You can call them for information or to schedule an appointment at 631-376-4444. Or, call the Long Island Blood Services. They can give you in formation on the nearest donor location. They can be reached at 516-478-5060. Do it now. The Am ityville Record invites readers to present their views, ideas and issues. Dear Editor: To William H. Hill. Upon reading your rebuttal to my “Open letter to atheists and non-believers” that was printed in the in the Jan. 6 edition of the Amityville Record, I sensed that your are burdened with a lot of hurt and disappointment. I never mentioned anything about abortion or gays in my letter. You made it clear that you are also unhappy with our great country, the United States o f America. Here we have the freedom to do so much, such as stating our opinions in the newspaper. These freedoms didn’t just happen. Thousands of men and women fought and died to obtain and protect them. Rest assured, my brain is well engaged, even if you have a different opinion o f my faculties. While reading what you wrote, I thought to myself, Subscribers can post comments on this letter and other let ters, stories and articles and photographs in this newspaper at www.amityvillerecord.com “Why is this guy attacking me so viciously when he doesn’t even know me? Did I hit a nerve?” As I read on, I found the answer. You claim that you are a proud member o f the A.C.L.U. Now I know your problem. God loves you. George Henry Kotz, West Islip Outlaw arrogance at the voting booth Dear Editor: Is there a difference between underperforming past and present Nassau elected officials who used taxpayer money to grant themselves exorbitant pay increases, and the financial scheming of past and present bank executives who used taxpayer money to give themselves extravagant bonuses? Is there an indifference demonstrated by both our elected legislators and big bank executives towards the people they serve? The answers are obvious. The solution is just as obvious. An indifferent populace can make the difference by using the power o f their voice, virtue and vote. Tony Mignone, Massapequa Park Gus is home, doing fine Dear Editor: I am Jennifer Howlett, wife of Captain Patrick Howlett, and “mommy” to Gus, the dog in your article, “Babylon soldier rescues dog in Iraq; brings him home.” I am happy to say that Gus is adjusting well to life in the States and our new home at Fort Knox, Kentucky.
