BEACON NEWSPAPER, February 4,2010 Babylon pride abounds during homecoming celebration Deer Park p re-k students celebrate Festival o f Lights Deer Parks Abraham Lincoln pre kindergarten students experienced the diversity o f the holiday season by participating in traditional Hanukkah activities. Students helped teachers cook potato latkes and placed wooden candles in a m enorah. Identifying the ingredients needed to prepare latkes, students learned how food is transform e d from a solid to a liquid (through cutting, mixing and blending) and watched the conversion of ingredients back to a solid when the latkes were poured into a pan and cooked on a stove. After enjoying their latkes, the children sang a special Hanukkah song, counting the number of candles on the menorah. Shown in the photo, Deer Park pre-kindergarten students participate in their holiday lesson, adding a candle for each day o f Hanukkah and counting the number o f lights on the menorah. The streets of Babylon Village were filled with members of the Babylon community who, dressed in orange and black, came together for Babylon High School’s Homecoming Day celebra tion. To kick-off the festivities, students, parents, teachers, and community members lined Montauk Highway. Marching in the parade were floats rep resenting each grade level, the Babylon High School marching band, varsity cheerleaders, members of the theatre company, and the homecoming court. Finalists in the homecoming court rode in sporty convertibles and waved to parade attendees as they passed by. The parade ended at the entrance to the Coach Walt Williams Field. The big game against Shoreham- Wading River kicked-off at 2 p.m. with the Panthers dominating over the com petition. The Panthers kept their lead against the Wildcats throughout the second half and finished the game with a score of 49 to 7. Claire Buser and Mi chael Augello were named this year’s homecoming queen and king.
